23719, clunking noise from front
Posted by misshift, May-03-04 03:12 AM
where to start...first thought it was a blown strut..back ones where blown so i replaced all 4..still doing it...then figured it was the sway bar..replace bushings and link..still doing it.. its basically a blown strut kind of sound.. happens when obviously i go over bumps.nothing too large either.however i believe it happens only when i go over something uneven. as in one front wheel hits and the other doesnt..which would leave me to believe that it would be the sway bar. both axels seem fine..just have very very minimal movement... i have no clue..bout ready to fix it by turning up the radio...if you have any ideas.. i would appreciate it

thanks

Have you had your tie rods checked? When you go over uneven surfaces, does your steering wheel seem to want to jerk left or right or feel really loose compared to what it used to feel like. When you changed your shocks/struts, did you replace all the bushings in the assembly as well? If you have a pretty good amount of miles on your car, your best bet would be to check those things out. A really cheap way to find out if your tie rods are good is to take it to the dealership and have the recall done on the ball joints. That way, when they go to reallign the car, they will have to tell you if the tie rods are good or not, because if they are bad, there is no way they can align the car.

is there a way to check the tie rods yourself to see if they are bad or not? and i didnt bother to replace any of the bushings in the shock assembly. they didnt seem bad, however i wasnt really checking them when i was doing the struts

i went out to the car...when i turn the wheel. the wheels respond instantly, however if i keep turning back and forth (left n right)slightly, i hear a similar clunking noise, could this be it??

Ball joints. Get the recall done if you haven't already.

Mine sounds like a pinball machine when you win a free game... and I've had the recall done already. Time to replace them again :(

Yep... sounds like ball joints. Have the dealership replace them under recall if you haven't already. Then they will have to check rods also... and they'll let you know if they are bad. Doesn't really sound like rods now that you say wheel feels tight.
