I am considering upgrading my brakes, and I have seen a few posts about using the AWD brakes on the FWD Eclipse (95 GS). I was wondering if anyone has done this, what all is needed to make the conversion, and what kinds of problems / good things were encountered. Also, was the performance better, the same, or worse using the AWD brakes? Any help is appreciated!

the front brakes from an AWD will bolt right up. don't even worry about the rears. use your stock stuff there. if you need that much braking, then look into getting the aem big-brake kits for front and rear.

from the AWD car, you'll need the front rotors, calipers & pads. your stock brake lines are compatible but now would be a good time to upgrade to some s/s braided lines. RRE sells an AWD upgrade. i got mine from them and opted for the slotted rotors, axxis pads, and of course the s/s lines. i also got stock replacement slotted rotors and axxis pads for the rear.

my first impression was that the pedal felt a little lower and this concerned me. it turns out that the dual piston calipers probably need just a tad more fluid flow to make them move so that's why the pedal felt lower. i quickly got used to it and now it feels perfectly normal.

my second impression was that braking response was much faster. probably had to do with the s/s lines not swelling and wasting fluid flow in the process.

my third impression was when i was doing about 80 mph, looked in my rear-view and didn't see anybody so i decided to give 'em a little test. WOW! it was like dropping anchor. my stock brakes never ever felt like that, ever!

total price for upgraded front and replacement rear with lines and fluid... $942

braking so good you need to wear goggles to keep your eyes in your head... priceless ;)

do you need 17" rims for the AWD upgrade?

Yes you need 17" wheels.

BUT if you are going to spend $900 on a brake upgrade to the front. I would not go to the AWD set up. For the same price you can get a 13" rotor and Baer dual caliper set up that is so much better than the AWD setup, with has something like a 11.75" rotor. For that price tag. I am going with the Baer kit. If you have that kind of money to spend and want the Baer kit I can point you in the right direction of some places to get it, I've looked aorund because I like the kit but don't have the money right now, especially since I need to do rear stuff as well

the $900 figure was for front and rear stuff. and i was running my stock 16's at the time and it fit.

I guess it makes sense though if you can fit a 13" under a 17" wheel you should be able to fit 11.75" under a 16"

We'll see how I like my new set up and what I plan to do as far as any SCCA Solo races and see if I still plan on the Baer kit. Now i'm just antsy to get my new rotors and pads and do the rear disc conversion. (All I need is time)

...brakes are nice and pricey. I wouldn't invest until you see how you current system performs. It should be better than the plain vanilla RRE kit for 500, that I have.

Oh Skrilla believe me, I'm no where near ready to spend $900 on my brakes yet, especially after the money I just put into the brake set up that is on it's way to me.I won't even concider it until I wear out the KVR rotors and pads and have to replace them... then well see where I'm at.

My next $900 goes to a Header, S-AFC, EGT, A/F, and the new autometer gauge bezel, so I can tune properly. Then the savings for my head work begins. (I think I'm going to wait until after my next emmissions test so I won't have to worry about it again for two years after I really mess with things)

I am looking to use my stock 16" rims......will a conversion to stock AWD calipers/rotors be compatible with stock 16" 95' GS rims?

So if the AWD calipers bolt right up, i can get the AEM upgrade, then bolt on the AWD calipers right? What about VR-4 calipers? What would I need to do that?

yes, you'll then be able to do any upgrade the AWD guys would then normally do.

No, VR-4 stuff will not work. However, I believe the base 3000gt will, as will the Glant front big brakes.

16" rims will work with the AWD front brake upgrade. Remember, 95-96 AWD DSM's came with stock 16"s rims.

NOTE: AWD upgrade is from 92 or 93 AWD DSM's on... 91-92 AWD brakes won't cut it.

900 bucks!!! Time to go junkyard shopping. Got my rear TSi brakes for 80 bucks!!!! with the hubs!!! Remember they're only happy as long as they make a buck or two.
