21628, HELP - Just put on new 17" rims&tires, now car shakes at high speeds Posted by fadegs, Dec-20-03 07:13 PM
Hi Guys,
I just put on these aftermarket 17" rims and tires I bought from wheelmax. Now my car shakes a lot when I'm driving at high speeds (around 80mph and up).
Did I do something wrong in putting on the new wheels/tires? Or are they not balanced properly by wheelmax? Or do I need to get new alignment with these new, larger rims?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Get an all-wheel alignment, quick. If not, you'll start wearing your tires unevenly and put excessive stress on your suspension. If you just put them on, try not to drive so fast - you should be ok driving around town for a day or two. When I got my 18's, I got a 4-wheel alignment after 2 days. 26,000 miles later, my tires are wearing pretty evenly. I'd also have a shop double check your balance to make sure maybe one of the weights didn't fall off when they were shipped. Good luck!

i would say get your balance double checked before you do an alignment when i went from my stock 14's to 18's (stock height mind you) i never had an alignment done, and never had trouble with uneven wear or shaking (even at 100+)
but then again, i was standing right over their shoulder when they were balancing them, so i know for a fact my balance was good
just my $.02

sounds like more of a wheel balancement issue than an alignment issue to me also ______________ Chris 96 ESI 5 spd Milwaukee, WI

I also agree on the wheel balance issue. One of the weights might have come off in shipping or they may have just not balanced em at all.

One more vote for a balance...and if you paid for the balancing from wheel max, well you get the point!

Either that or one of your tires is bad. I had a tire with a bubble in it once and it shook like crazy at 80mph

If you tire pattern is directional make sure there all facing the right way.
