21117, How much does LSD really affect the handling of our car??
Posted by totaleklipse97, Nov-18-03 04:12 PM
I've been really curious about LSD's lately and i just really haven't found that much info about them from the search function. I get the basic concept of them and different ones work different ways. I know the quaife is by far the best but it's very $$. I've also heard alot about PG, im not turbo and im not pushing 200+ hp. I'm just hoping to get more info about them. How do they effect our daily drivability? Do they make the car handle better? What about turning capabilities? Really just as much information as you can give would be excellent, or if you know of a site that is like a dummies guide to LSD's. TIA, really...

Yes, its alot different if you ask me. Esp if you have some nuts behind it, you dont get torque steer all the goodies of having bettertraction..

i read all that i could on how things work but i still had a few questions. I don't have enough money for a quaife, and i hear alot of guff about the PG. What is so bad about it, no one is really specific other than the fact it runs off the stock differential.. im not turbo but i believe an LSD would be a big step on the way to the ever impressive 14's. I figure most of the time drop will be off of 60ft times, say if you hit 2.4's what kind of change would u expect? and does the LSD like PG since it's not a clutch type similiar to quaife, how is that going to affect my turning and handling?? Just as much infor on the handling aspect would be much appreciated...

The Quaife is not a clutch type, it is a torque biasing type. It operates on a whole different principle. I don't know how to describe it accurately enough to say, but hopefully someone can explain it to you. I know a clutch style diff operates just like an open diff once you start spinning 1 wheel. Once you overcome the friction of the clutches it doesn't help any.

Ok, I am going to give this a shot, please correct me if I am wrong. The Quaife differential is a torque biasing unit. This means that it will apply the torgue to the wheel with the most traction. This should minimize wheel spin at both wheels. If one wheel should start to spin the torque will be transfered to the other wheel. I think you can do a search on google and find out how they work. If you don't find it there, check out: www.HowStuffWorks.com
That is a great website.

well i have already read all that stuff on how things work, i was hoping for feedback from guys that have actually USED LSD's on their cars. SO to any guy with LSD PLEASE REPLY!! (thanks for ur help so far ozzmossis)

Check out, http://www.quaifeamerica.com/ They have some info on their website about how their diff works. I have driven cars with LSD's before, just not a DSM. A LSD will help eliminate torque steer in front wheel drive cars, which can help drivability alot with modified cars.

The PG LSD is used on a 2 pieces of aluminum i believe or aircraft grade. And there are 4 springs that push the 2 pieces against the spydergears in the differential. When you go into a turn physics takes in place and applys more pressure to the outside wheel for better traction. Now it will always act like a 50/50 unless I stated before going around a turn. If one wheel slips it will try and rely on the other wheel to catch some ground. I hope that explains it pretty well.

I learned a lot about how LSD's help out by reading forums.2gnt.com/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=34&topic_id=748&mesg_id=748&page=4 post by JasonESi-T. Too bad the NuSkool seems to be a death nugget for teh trannies. :(

hey brian have you had any luck finding more info on the Retrofit Lsd by carlton. I've used the search button so much it's worn out.. but the only real info i can find is on the main site with the write up on it. I've heard exile MIGHT* be installing these, if that is the case i would drive to chicago to have it installed with a new clutch too. (probably pt cruiser style) if you hear anything from dino about the price and availability let me know thanx... looking out for the All motor crew!

Ok, I have the quaife LSD in my car. I love it. I noticed a huge difference in traction when I get on it. My best 60' time with the old block was a 2.1, which is pretty good for a FWD car. I attribute most of that to the LSD. Just regular driving I do not notice any difference, only when I get on it, it locks the diff and I go.

Does this help any?

I am still rockin the death nugget (Newskool) x(

I am waiting on my other trans to be fixed so I can put a GOOD LSD in that tranny and drop it into the car in the spring.

yes bryden that helps, i appreciate the info. I've been looking into this but i wasn't sure how much it would affect turning. A few guys have said that turning was improved and definately accel. Im looking forward to the retrofit, since i don't have the cash to put on a quaife. I could hit 2.4 60ft's on stock tires and reg tire pressure. I am definately hoping for 2.1's or even lower since i have new tires and going with the ES motor mount inserts, these gonna work well together??

Yeah, I have the motor mounts too. I did not notice a difference in steering with my LSD. But then again my power steering pump does not work at low rpm's. It sucks.

The fun part is that a LSD will allow your car to turn in under throttle. When you enter a corner with an open differential, nailing the throttle will spin the tyre that is easier to spin (the inside one), and push the front end out of the corner. Presto, understeer. With a limited slip, however, nailing the throttle while in a corner will bring the front end around, making it act much more neutral. The suspension will probably still be biased towards understeer, but a limited slip will help keep you from pushing on the corners.
