20755, possible BIG BRAKE idea...
Posted by JWoodley, Oct-28-03 04:56 PM
ok. as we all know the GSX brake upgrade works well for our cars is and amazingly cost effective compared to a $1300 AEM kit. i personally have limited knowledge of how our brake systems work, but i was wondering if you could take another front brake setup and use it on the rear brakes? i have no idea how mounting would be affected or anything else for that matter. on the GS, do we have the same brakes on the front and back? i'm thinking if we do, that this might work. i know this idea needs alot of research, but most, if not all of you are in better financial situations than me and might be able to try this. please, post all ideas, thoughts, or opinions. i think this could be great if it works, and if not it might lead to other ideas. also, any diagrams of brake setups would be nice. im off to do some research. thanks.

GS/GST/GSX have the same disc brakes in back. except certain year GSX's that had slotted rear discs or somethin like that. i don't think there's any cheap bolt up swap right now for our cars. generally the consensus is that if you beef up the front brakes you don't really gotta worry 'bout the rear much. anyways isn't our braking system setup to favor the front? i forget..

there's somebody on the board with a sick wilwood 6pot caliper setup up front and somethin nice in the back too i think. somethin like that. maybe he'll post...

The rear rotors are the same all 2g's. The 95 AWD cars did get vented rear rotors, but that is the only year that happened. Also you can get a BAER big brake kit for $700 with PBR 2 pot calipers and those come with 13' rotors. Anyhow rear brake upgrades are not really necessary on our cars. The front brakes do most of the braking anyway (90%). However if you have rear drums in the back swapping over to rear disc does make for a firmer pedal and better brake modualtion in my opinion.

On DSMtuners I saw a 2nd gen with Brembo rear calipers. Looked like they might have been off an EVO. Not sure if you really can do that tho.

I think that I am just gonna go big brakes on the front and throw some braided lines on the back with better pads. Larger rotors and calipers on the rear are pretty much eye-candy IMO.

Also I remember seeing a GSX with the early 3000GT VR4 front brakes calipers that say Mitsubishi on them. Not sure what kinda fabrication was necessary for that, but I have always wanted to do that too. Maybe I will do a little research.

the non vr4's had the same calipers as the gsx except for the banjo fitting.

Uhm, you can't put larger brakes in the rear than in the front from what I understand.

All cars are front biased because when you brake your weight shift forward, so the front brakes on any vehicle need to be bigger and stronger. So the rear are sized based on that front to rear biased ratio.

Now I suppose if you put the front discs into the rear and upgraded the fronts to a larger disc it would be okay, but I wouldn't put 13" rotors front and rear. I can't prove or gaurantee there would be a problem, but I believe it wouldn't make your car happy.

Okay,
if you wanted you could put whatever you want on the front and back with regards to disk size. If you do put say 13 inch disks all the way around you would have to use a rear caliper with a smaller piston diameter to offset for the increased brake torque caused by the larger disk. On my car I have 13 inch disks in front, with 6 piston calipers. On the rear I have 12.2 inch disks with 2 piston calipers. The disk size is only a .8 inch differece from the front to back, but the rear calipers are much smaller and have a much smaller piston area when compared to the front. Even if you do use 4 of exactly the same calipers and disks for the front and rear you could insert an inline adjustable proportioning valve on each rear line and tune the rear brakes down. The main key is that the rear brakes should never lock before the fronts. As for the rear brakes being purely cosmetic, i have to disagree with you. although the gains are not as noticable as putting a front kit only, the thing i did notice was that with only the front kit under hard braking the car would dive forward. this would make the weight transfer from front to back very severe, causing the rear to lift substantially. When I installed my rear kit the weight transfer from front to back was severely minimized. now when I mash the brakes the car stays relatively flat. there is still noticable weight transfer but the car remains controllable and does not dive as severely as just with a front brake.

I know that there may be a slight difference with putting larger brakes on the rear, but my point was really to say that for the money, the rear brake upgrade that you have is more or less cosmetic as opposed to the money spent on the front brakes. The front brakes will always do the majority of the work therefore the rear brake upgrade is not as much a "necessity" for performance improvement.

Hell if and when I have the money I am gonna do Wilwoods front and rear too.

Nice car by the way!

I agree completely with you with regards to the cost to performance factor. I think the cost of the kit ($675) is about 30% performance and 70% bling bling. You will definitely see the most gains with a front kit, I think since I went with such a big ass front system, the rear system was almost necessary to complement the fronts. If one was to step up to a system that is less hardcore I think the rear upgrade would be trivial.

just invest in some good pads and rotors.
