there seems to be a ton of questions about this upgrade so if we can centralize all the info in one post and get it stickied it'd save alot of time.

RRE's got the awd AEM crossdrilled/slotted 12.5" two piece rotors with red,silver, or blue aluminum hats for $350 too :thumbsup

they'll sell you gsx calipers if you can't find 'em anywhere but it's kinda on the steep side ($300+/pair)

got everything for my conversion from them. great service :thumbsup

for cars without ABS, you can switch out the break booster and master cylinder from an ABS car for better breaking.

don't forget the mother of all billet brakes, The wilwood billet superlite 6 from TCE performance products. They have kits for our cars in 11, 12, 13 inch disks; 4 pot, 6 pot, forged, or dustbooted wilwood calipers and now they have a 2 piston wilwood rear brake kit with a 12 inch disk.

I dont know if this applies to the DPC's that hades used, but i used 1st gen single piston calipers on my car (long story) and they do not use a banjo fitting, they have the same kind of fitting as the DPC's that hades used. All I had to do was cut a couple of threads off of the banjo bolt and they thread right on and work great. No new brake lines needed.

who has the best deals for the 2 piston calipers and brackets? i e-mailed M+S Recycling out of Rancho Cordova. Their price was $200 for calipers and rotors, no core charge.

If you don't want to search junkyards and buy parts separately, you can buy the 2G AWD Big Brake Kits from RRE or DSS. They come with the 2G AWD calipers, PowerSlot rotors, Axxis pads, and SS lines. Just keeping searching the parts traders for people selling their calipers.

Does this conversion apply to the RS models with the rear drum brakes as well, or is there something else you have to do with those when you swap them?

Just a quick question. When doing the gsx front brake upgrade, do you have to buy the caliper brackets separately, or do they come with the calipers when you buy them new?

Just to verify, I have had my GSX dual piston calipers for a couple months now. Unfortunately I have had to deal with using my small stock rotors in the meantime. My question is, does the GSX rotor fit on a 2gnt's hub? are the hubs the same size? I just ordered a set of brembo blanks from coximport and ordered the ones for the gsx/tsi awd. I want to make sure they will fit, if not I will call them up and change the order.

Ok, well I just wasted the night in the garage swapping brakes around to see what fits. Figured I'd post it and make it useful info for somebody. I wish I could think of a better way to organize this, but I just inhaled a lot of asbestos or something ;)

GSX (2-piston) caliper + GSX Bracket + GSX pads + stock rotor
= Doesn't work, gsx pads hang about 1/4 inch off the end of the rotor.
= Does fit inside stock 16" 5star wheels

GSX caliper + GSX bracket + GSX rotor + GSX pads
= Works perfectly in stock 16"s
= Must bend back or replace dust shield (you have to unbolt the hub from the axle to remove it)

GSX caliper + GSX bracket + AEM GSX big brake kit & big rotor
= Needs 2mm ground off the gsx bracket and the 2gnt hub
= Needs dust shield severly bent back or removed
= Needs at least 17" wheels, of correct offset.

GSX caliper does not fit in 2gnt bracket.

2GNT caliper will bolt to AEM GSX big brake kit.

You must have a GSX bracket to mount a GSX caliper and GSX pads.

There are (at least) 3 different kinds of GSX calipers
- 1995-1999 GSX, 7mm bleeder (8mm wrench), banjo fitting
- 1993-1994 GSX, 10mm bleeder (10mm wrench), flare fitting
- 1990-1992 GSX, Unknown, but is smaller, and has smaller pistons. Same size as 1990-1994 GST stock brakes

3000gt/stealth VR4/turbo uses 4 piston calipers and totally different pads and brackets. Only thing useful is the front brakes an from a nonturbo 3000gt SL.

Be prepared to round off the fitting on the factory hard lines. Use lots of liquid wrench. I had to use an air hammer against a 10mm openend wrench (ghetto impact wrench!) to undo it. You may want spares before you start. Front pair should be $10 total.

GSX Caliper rebuild kit: Raybestos WK2029 or Brakeware 66164, contains 2 rubber seals, 2 rings, and 2 boots. You'll need 2 packages. For some reason, Autozone lists this under 1993 Nonturbo 3000gt.

GSX pad retaining clips: Raybestos 15771 or Brakeware H5832, contains 4 metal clips that sit in bracket and hold the pads in place. You only need one package.

Factory OEM part numbers:
RMB 699 450 Remanufactured Caliper Kit LH (includes caliper, bracket, and bolts)
RMB 699 451 Remanufactured Caliper Kit RH (includes caliper, bracket, and bolts)
MR 493-985 Pad Set
MR 389-652 Shim Kit
MR 389-599 Clip Set

Get steel braided lines from www.roadraceengineering.com, $85 includes all 4 lines.

An "Unloaded caliper" is just that, the caliper and nothing else.
A "LOADED caliper" is the caliper, *the bracket!*, and pads.

Therefore, you can buy a "loaded" 2-piston GSX caliper, and return your 2GNT 1-piston caliper and bracket to get the core charge refund, and you have a nice new 2-piston caliper for about $120 each. You'll still need to buy the big GSX rotor too.

I got my pads/rotors/calipers off of a diamante, and also went from my 14" steelies/hubcaps to the Diamante's 15" 5 stars. I believe this brake setup is the same, so it should fit in 15" wheels also. That is how the Diamante came from the factory so I'm sure it's safe. I always see people saying, "You must have 16" wheels"...It may be different for someone else, but it worked with my 15's. :shrug Also...This assembly JUST barely clears the brake dust shield. I had to take a large screwdriver on the passenger side and push it back a pinch. The drivers side was fine. Otherwise, all you have to deal with is getting the SS lines....which I need to do. I rigged up the Diamante lines on my eclipse for now.:shrug
...Here's what the wheels look like for those who may be wondering. I haven't taken pics of them on my car yet.

I just ordered a set of GSX fronts with pads, brackets, rotors, dust shields, everything. I have already converted my rear drums to discs. I know the master cylinder/brake booster is an upgrade. I was just wondering if anything has to be done with the proportioning valve, or are they all the same? I would think with there being a greater surface area in the front(2 pistons vs 1), that it would require more fluid or the rears would have a tendency to lock up under hard braking. I can already lock my brakes up at will, but I'd like to keep it "at will" and not when I try to brake.

The valve is the same part number I believe. True the 2 piston caliper would take more fluid but once you ahve the system full the pressure should be the same.

I like the idea of buying a loaded caliper for GSX and then just getting rotors so it all bolts on. Can this be done as well for the rears? I am just wondering if the parking brake on DSMs are different--are some actuated calipers and others with the mini-drum set up inside the rotor?

The GSX and the GS come with the same rear disc brakes i beleive. Only really to upgrade on the rears is the rotor and SS brake lines.

I got the rotors today at S&G Imports for $29 a rotor. That seems to be a good price. Napa had them for $18! But they didn't have them in stock. Here are some pics.

Stupid question....

Can you convert RS Drums to disc without changing the 14" stock wheels to a larger size? Icannot afford to buy wheels but might be able to get a deal on the conversion parts.

It shouldn't be a problem. Also, just for the record, the dual piston front calipers will fit inside ALL 16" wheels, and SOME 15" wheels. 15's are really tight around the caliper, like less than 1/4" of space between the caliper and the inside of the rim. A friend of mine with a 2g AWD busted a wheel and had to put on some 3g 15 inchers. Made his brakes look huge.

I upgraded to GSX brakes, and found they are great, but are not sufficient for going down big hills and track use...

I will be testing out the 4 POT TWR racing brakes soon and my brother will be testing out the AEM 4 Pot Kit so we will have a good comparison soon.

It says only for Subaru, but they are planning to make DSMs kits if this testing phase works out.

i just upgraded to the GSX front upgrade and also redid the rear. I found the calipers at a local junk yard for 35 a piece for the fronts, 30 a piece for the rears. I decided to powder coat the brackets and polish the calipers at school. I also upgraded the rotors to cross drilled and slotted all around, axxis pads all the way around and SS brake lines all around. I spent close to 6 hours of prep work on painting and polishing the calipers and about 5 hours for the full instal. I am still breaking the pads and rotors in (500-1000 miles is recomeded) but so far so good. I have noticed the the back breaks grab a little sooner than before. but once you get into the pedal the fronts grab great. All in All i spent about $500.00 for the whole upgrade (powdercoat, calipers front and rear, rotors, pads and lines). I have also noticed the hotter my breaks get the better they grab, i have yet to over run them because i am trying to be nice to them so i get a good break in.
