DarkEclipseRSR1997 hi i was wondering if anyone knows what the widest tire fits my car in a 17inch rim its a 1997 Eclipse RS!i was looking at Pirelli's and the widest they have are p315/35ZR-17 but there a lil to expensive but the p235/45ZR-17's sound a lil better at $142.00 a piece which reminds me anyone know if i can get these or Nitto 555's or 450's @ a lower price please let me know thanx peace out happy Easter sunday .

A better way to ask your question is to tell us the exact size and offset of your rims. Then ask what is the maximum width tire you can use, while maintaining overall stock height. If you do a search for wheels and tires in the discussion board, you will come up with plenty of prior questions and answers. discounttiredirect.com and tirerack.com list many choices for you to compare performance and price.

17 inch wheel:
6.5 inch width 205/50/17
7 inch width 215/45/17
7.5 inch width 225/45/17
8 inch width 235/40/17 (make sure you get the correct offset that will fit and not rub)

wider width will not give better handling if the rim is not wide. try and stay above 80% and below 90% rim width compared to tire width. Example: 225 width= 8.858 inches 7.5 rim width divided by 8.858 tire with= 85% ratio

This will yield good handling through reduced sidewall flex and promotes good tire wear by keeping the majority of the tread on the pavement. Too skinny of a tire with a wide rim does not handle good and tends to blowout even over the smallest potholes.

I prefer 225 on 8" wide rims 215 on 7.5" and so on. This way more of your rubber is laying flat on the ground. It makes a difference

Im with Skrilla. Just got 17x8 sparcos, and im gonna run 225/45/17 potenza 730's

yep, id say an 8 is the widest that will fit (the rear might hit the control arm with a 9" and thr front will hit that little area of the fenderwell that bows inward next to the hex bolt)

Yeah the 315 is the rear size for a Corvette ZR-1.

By the way Irfin let me know how you like the Potenza's that what I want to put on wheels, I'm getting tird of seeing them in my room without tires.

THATS THE REASON I POSTED MY Q's well i was looking at some 17X8 momos in a stillen ad from Turbo mag and they came with235/45ZR17 NITTOS OR KUMHO TIRES. AND GOT TO THINKING PS I REALLY dont know much about it all so thanx for the 411 keep it coming peace

...wider tires don't equal more grip. So 225 on 7" wide rims aren't as good 205 on 7" or 225 on 8"(the best combo)
