17191, GSX dual-piston calipers work in stock brackets? Posted by thedawg, Apr-23-03 07:20 AM
I got a set of GSX calipers, without brackets though. I took off my RS single piston caliper last night and it looks like the GSX caliper will fit perfectly, it's the same size as the single, just two pistons. What's the deal, is that all there is to the swap? just the caliper and lines? :wary
Also, how do you compress the pistons in a dual piston caliper? With the single I just used a c-clamp.

Hmmm... I had never thought about trying that. The GSX brackets locate the caliper a bit farther out, which is why you would need new calipers. You would just need to make sure your rotors are the same thickness of a GSX rotor.
I would measure mine but its raining right now. You can compress the pistons one at a time and they should stay long enough to allow you to get the caliper on.

If that's the case I'm interested I was keeping the single calipersup front to be able to run smaller wheels at the track, but if I can slide a dual caliper over my stock rotors, well stock size anyway, that could be done down the road.
The other thing to look out for is pad dimensions and will they interfier with the inner chunk of the rotor...

Did anyone find out yet?

to compress them use the old pads in a c clamp. GSX calipers will fit over 16's. 95 GSX came with 16's and 17's were optional.

IMO, even if the duals fit inside the stock caliper brackets, you will not get a big of gain when using the GSX brackets, as said above, it moves the caliper farther out. Thats where you get the majority of your better braking.(just like a "big brake" kit)

ya gsx's have bigger rotors. that's why you get more contact area and more grabbing... even if it works idk how much help it'd be. i didtn' really look at the stock ones before i did the swap so idk if it bolts up. i thought you had to swap brackets AND rotors to make it work though...

I agree, gains from just putting dual piston calipers on stock (small) rotors would be minimal, if any.
I suspect the GSX brackets are just taller to accomodate the .75" larger GSX big rotors. FYI the 3G V6 front rotors are the same as the 2G GSX big rotors.
I'll just put the GSX calipers on my stock rotors/brackets for now until I get a big brake kit, and see if it makes any difference.

So the GSX calipers fit our stock rotors?

Since we are on the subject... Do you have to change the brake lines out too, or will the stock ones work with GSX calipers?

i think thats covered on the write up on the front page. either way it'd be a good time to switch to braided stainless.
