15324, Need help!!!! Skunk2 coilover install.... Posted by brynden29, Jan-28-03 11:41 AM
Guys, I have a problem. I got a set of skunk2 coilovers with kyb agx shocks and springs. It does not appear that the 2 will work together. Has anyone done this install that can hook a brutha up with the info? I am suppose to do it this weekend, but if I can't get it to work it will be off. Lemme know quick.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Perches dude, got to knock those things off. If they don't come off after a few wacks then you are either going to have to cut them off, or get a different kind. Koni's have removable perches. I have stock and the perches come right off when you hold it upside down and wack the perch.
I've had 6 suspensions so far with 3 different brands of coilovers. Anything just message me on MSN/AIM.

The Skunk2's and Ground Controls do not work well with KYB AGX shocks because the perches can't be knocked off easily from what I've been told. The GR2 perches can be knocked right off with a hammer, but for the AGX, you'd have to carefully grind down the perches so that the inside of the skunk2 collar could rest on it. Most people end up getting different shocks. Also, FYI skunk2 coilovers will not fit properly with Tokiko Premium Performance shocks either (they'll fall off the perches after a while - it happened multiple times to Ian's car).

So you think it would be better to get different shocks than to try to grind off the perches on the AGX's I just got? If I was going to get new shocks which should I get that would be the easiest to make the skunks work with?

Koni's you can just remove the perch without any grinding/hammering. They are $500 though. Hope you have enough in your secret paypayl fund.
Why go with coilovers vs springs?

I want something stiffer than springs for racing.

One thing about using Koni shocks is that you don't know if they will work okay with the skunk2. The collar still has to rest on something, and if the small ring (perch) on the Koni is too small, it will just slide right through. The reason I wonder about the Konis is because Ground Control has a special edition of their coilover specifically for use with the Koni shocks. Hopefully someone on this board has them with Konis and can speak up. GR2's are safe because I have them with my car and the perches knocked off fine, but that would be a downgrade from the AGX. However, the front AGX shocks are too long to begin with (you lose an inch of travel over other brands), so you might want to switch those out anyways. The skunk2's are VERY stiff, with 599 lb.ft spring rates, so I think you'll be happy with them. I would wait on the shocks til other people say what they have successfully used. I think its possible to grind down the AGX perch, but you just have to be very careful.
