I wanna ditch all my power steering stuff and ac n whatnot.....I don't really use ac and i actually like no power steering. So, is there any way to switch to rack and pinion at all??? What is needed, and how much you think i am looking at???? TIA NWN.

You need to do your homework to find a car (chrysler or mitsu) that came with manual steering. Take some measurements and make sure the shaft that goes into the column is the same. Im positive, that if you have a steering gear that will fit the bottom of the column, and has the same measurements (within reason) you could easily make it work. You may need to fabricate some new mounting brackets and go to the local auto parts store the find a tie rod end that will fit the new st-gear and also fit the knuckle on your car. The only drawback is you will more then likely loose the nice tight steering feeling in your ride, and it will take more turns of the steering wheel to do a normal turn your used to. The power steering gear has a different ratio then a manual. In other words, if your wheels are pointing straight and you turn it all the way to the left, it may take a turn and a half(just guessing). Where as a manual would take two and a half (guessing again) to do the same turn.
Power steering, ac, idler pulley are run by the crank shaft on that belt.

Forgot to mention, power steering includes, the pump & mounting bracket, hoses going to the rack&pinion, fill resivour and lines. Also if you take off the ac equipment you could remove the idler pulley and there would be no more need for that acessory belt.

what function does the idler pulley serve???

it keeps and adjust tension on the belt. it also causes the belt to come in contact with more the pulleys

I have heard that you can just remove the pump and lines, and just use your current rack and P. It would be just like if you ever threw a belt off and had to steer it without power. From what i know, it wont hurt the rack, although i have never done it :wary

That is what i am doing now and i really don't mind it. I jus figured that all the power steering additives would hinder the steering a tad and make it a lil harder.

Weight Reduction: CF Hood, No A/C or Powersteering Accessories, No rear interior

Dude I took all my crap out and you wont believe the giant opening you get after taking out all the a/c and powersteering....oh and when you take out the a/c dont forget the fan to...because whats the point in having it if you dont have a/c....it truely is a beautiful sight to have that huge opening right in front of your engine so it gives you that much more room for something alittle loco like a turbo maybe? heheheh....and with all that weight gone your probably looking at a good 80 or more lbs lost off your car...so i say go for it...take that crap off and engine building those arm muscles
