I have a 5-speed '98 GS. After a minor accident ($4500 for repairs and custom work on my body kit), my tranny started acting up. I asked a few people who know a bit about cars (so I though) and they said to put the green Transmission fix crap that AutoZone sells in my trann fluid and I'd have no problems. They assured me that it was okay on a 5-speed. I checked with the AutoZone people... same response, so I put it in with that sinking "oops" feeling in my stomach.

I took the car to the dealership after the problem persisted, and when I picked it up, they said they'd inspected the tranny (including fluid) and flushed the gear oil. The car runs fine.

Fast forward 3 months--> I go to get my brakes changed/upgraded, and the guy at the shop tells me that the fluid is causing every rubber part in my brake system to swell up, and it'll be $1800 to replace everything. Even the rubber inside the tranny resivoir cap is almost twice the original size. Will a tranny flush and refil work? How can I fix this? How long do I have? Thanks!!!

off topic but never use anything but the mitsu mtx tranny fuild for our 5 spd trannys.

uhh....the tranny fluid has nothing to do with the brake fluid...Whatever you did to the tranny has no effect on the braking system, they run on two seperate fluids.

yea dood you lost me. why are you talking about the transmission fluid and the break fluid like that, are you confusing the two? just flush your break fluid with some dot3 stuff. you can easily upgrade/fix your break system and pay way less for parts than what that guy quoted you

Take the brake fluid cap off and push the rubber part back into the cap. This rubber piece is designed to follow the fluid level, so when the fluid level drops, the rubber follows. The idea is to keep air (and the moisture IN the air) from being in constant contact with the brake fluid. Worst case scenario, and everything rubber in the brake setup is going to shit, replacing the fluid, the 4 lines to the calipers, the master cylinder, and rebuilding all 4 calipers shouldn't cost more then a couple of hundred dollars.

I think that the shop is trying to screw you over, though.

Thanks everybody...Sorry about the post, but I didn't know where else to put it. The car takes a little longer to stop because my pads are almost gone, but other than that, it's fine so far. I'll have it flushed and refilled and see what happens. Thanks again!

Don't get too comfortable. If you put the wrong fluid in your brake reservoir you could be on the way to disaster. I accidentally put power steering fluid in my brake reservoir once when I was a kid (not this car) and it cause basically aneurisms in my brake lines where they are rubber. I had to have everything re-done. The problem is the fluid does destroy all rubber in that system.

You need to post exactly what you f'ed up so people will know.

Well, I got the tranny flushed and refilled for $27.00, and everything worked pretty good until today when my brakes started grinding :o. Long story short, I need new rotors and pads. Not related to the fluid, but thanks for all the knowledge!!! I love this site!!!
