14356, Damn tire size question again
Posted by Dirty, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
I have the OZ F1 wheels for the '99GS. The stock tires on them are 205/55R16. I want to keep the same gap I have in the fenders but I want a wider tire. What size tires will fit? Same hight, but wider.

you can put 225-55-16 tires on them.

a guy told me that 215/50R16 would be a good size. What do you think of this one?

>a guy told me that 215/50R16 would be a good size.
well i think that wider is better, with a 215/50R16 you will have less traction area but you would have a smaller sidewall which means the wheel flex would be less. i have known people to squeeze 235 on their cars, but without a very low series like a 35 or so their is to much wheel flex causing the tire to rub against the knuckle. with a 225/55R16 (i have these in a 95V) you have more surface actually touching the ground and there isn't enough flex to cause the tire to rub. O and less fender gap too.

So you have this tire size on some stock tires? Have any problems?

nope none there is about a 3/8 inch gap between the tire and the knuckle, i just got new rims(had 14"stock) about a month ago, they had 205/55r16 tires on them, i had the 225's put on about 3 weeks ago, they grip way better.

i got mine at a local shop. they are Federal, V rated tires(up to 149mph). i went with federal cause of the price, i payed $75 + $14for mounting and balancing per tire. But i'm sure whatever brand you go with you will be happy with the increased grip the 225's give you over the 205's.

I just ordered some Kumho ECSTA SUPRA 712 225/55ZR-16 95W B.

Does that sound pretty good? I have never owned Kumho's before, but I heard some good things about 'em

proper tire sizes are 205 55 and 215 50. if you want wider get 205 50. 205 50 will be about the same as what you have and you'll have more choices. 225 50 is for an 8 inch wide rim. you can sorta tell in juggalos pic that the sidewall is starting to roll abit. shouldn't happen. i have V rated 205 55's and they don't roll over like that.

what do you mean by roll? is the side wall supposed to be straight up and down? i had 205 55's on but the 225 55 get way better grip and i haven't had a problem with the sidewalls flexing.

I realize you ordered already so this is more educational for everyone else. If you want wider tires the only number you should be concerned about is the 205|215|225 - the number of mm the tire is wide. There's 25.4 mm in an inch so a 225 wide tire would be a bit less than 9" The 2nd number, 50|55 is the height of the sidewall and has nothing to do with width. The 225 Kumo's you ordered should be fine, you will have some exta "bulge" so it will be important that you keep your tires properly inflated. Juggalo - I almost recently bought Fedrals - sales guy told me they were the "up and coming tire" - How do you like em?

In order:
Mirror Tint|Grillcraft grill|SprilMax|GST Exhaust|Front/Rear strut bars|EBC brakes|Brembo Crossdrill/slotted rotors|AEM CAI|NGK Plugs|Magnecor Wires|Konig VeloCT 17x7|Niitto 450's|55mmTB|

Just an update...

I didn't get my shit yey because I don't check my email to often and I had one from Discount Tire saying they wanted to make sure that this is the size I really wanted before they send them because it's not the right size. I called them and they said the 225/50,s would be the proper step up and not 225/55's because there would be too much "bulge". So I had them change it to the 225/50's instead of the 225/55's. I cost $4 less, and I hope this works or I might have to send a Juggalo over there to set things straight. }>

I just wanted to post this incase anyone else had this question.

hell yeah i will. i just walk in there and bust'em in the head with a 2 liter of faygo.
i was thinking about 50s but not till after this post started. a little bit more wheel gap with the 50s too. the psi on mine is 42 i believe but the shop that sold them recomended only inflating them to 36, but i'm not sure why.

Thanx, Juggalo. I knew you had my back.

I usually inflate mine about 4psi below the max cause when you drive the tires and the air inside them heats up and expands. Check your pressure before you drive and then go drive for awhile and test it after that. It's always higher when their hot.

yeah but it doesnt raise it more that 2 or 3 psi does it. i have never actually bought new tires before. when my 1st set on my rs 14" rims wore out i just got another set of 14's with new tires already on them. so i guess i have always been driving my car when i would air up my tires. so they were always warmed up.
hey did you check ur male?

Do you mean the "Lose 22.5 pounds in 5 days for free!" that I deleted without reading? :+

Yeah man, thanx for the info on that. :thumbsup I'd give you some more feedback but they restrict us to one good deed only.

As for the tire psi, I don't think it expands to much in there, but I always leave mine a few psi lower than max. With your sidewalls I might fill it to the max though. With the one's I'm getting I might leave it at max too. I just don't know cause I haven't gotten the damn things yet.
