13888, What's Hitting?
Posted by Schavez98Eclipse, Dec-03-02 12:19 PM
I lowered my 1998 RS recently using Matrix GR Motor Sports Coil-Overs and Tokico gas shocks (the blue ones), now there is something hitting underneath the car in the front wherever I drive. I can't figure out what it is though. Otherwise the look and ride are both ok. Any suggestions?

how much did you lower it and what size rims/tires do you have?

check to make sure the "black rubber things" are in the same order of placement in all four spring/shock setup. not sure if this is ur prob, but i had a pretty harsh ride for a while because of this.

I can tell you from experiance, having the struts' mounting pieces messed up with cause TERRIBLE banging. If its messed up one way youll get it with even the smallest bumps and one way youll get it with the bigger bumps. Look into this. The slightest misperfection can cause everything to go out of place with the first bump and clang after that. One thing to look for is right under the hood at the upper strut mounting area. Is it sitting straight, flush and tight? Or crooked at all, loose upper mounting bolt etc? For me, the top of the strut, that rod thing, was hitting the underside of the hood.

DId you cut your bumpstop also?

Yes I cut the bumpstops and put all of the bushings back correctly. It was actually worse before, because I didn't have them in at all. But I fixed all of that, and it is still hitting. I can lean on the hood and make the car hit without driving it. I think the suspension is hitting the wheel well somewhere. The coil-over kit says 2-3" drop, but it looks more like 1.5" right now. I have the stock 14" rims on it right now.

All I can really say is put some time into it. I had mad hitting going on ALL tires after I dropped it. I would spend hours in the garage on various days and slowly cut down on the hitting. Now Im finally back to quiet. All I can say is mess around and narrow things down, take things apart and put them back together. Maybe lower the car and feel around for anything thats very close to the body.

tokico blues are the lower end strut from tokico. with coils you may be to low for those struts and bottoming out. if you read my post in another thread here about 19's i talked about the differences in springs and sleeve coils.

from reading that the point here would be that the spring in the coils would be to soft for thestrut and allows more shock to get through and you would be causing the top of the strut piston to whack around.

How would I get some different springs for the same coil-over set?
