13723, NEED HELP ASAP
Posted by Eclipse550HP, Nov-25-02 04:09 PM
Hey guys I really need to know if a 16" rim with a 55 series tire is the same as a 17" rim with a 45 series tire. thanks

from what i have learned it is the same. Its just that the 17" rim will weigh more than the 16 most of the time. The 17 is better for handling and the 16 is better for the track due to less weight.

Here ya go........

for a 205 55 16-

Sidewall: 4.4"
Radius: 12.4"
Diameter: 24.9"
Circum: 78.2"
Revs/mile: 811.0

for a 215 45 17-

Sidewall: 3.8"
Radius: 12.3"
Diameter: 24.6"
Circum: 77.3"
Revs/mile: 819.0

this is where i got the info http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
granted, it's for a miata, but I don't think that it makes a difference; math is math.

hope that helped

also, check out the "tires" section on www.dsm.org there are links to tire size calculators there which are very useful

for a 205/55/16, 215/50/17 would be the equivalent

205/55/16 is the same height as 225/45/17

215/45/17 is slightly shorter and 215/50/17 is taller than the ones above.

All tires are different. This is bases on tread depth and overall manufacturers design specs. Check the overall height in the specs section of tirerack.com or manufactuers site to see what it really is.

I have seen 225/50/16 performance tires(same height as stock) be anywhere from 24.6-25.1 inches tall.

BTW: the 2G GSX that came with 17x6.5 wheels really should have a 205/50/17 tire because of the wheel width IMHO
