You don't have to use a CD box (like MSD, Crane, etc.) for the Megasquirt ignition stuff to work. GM HEI ignition modules are used to trigger the coils. The Megasquirt has full control over the spark. This means that you can retard, advance, and program the spark map to do whatever the hell you want it to do. This is normally what guys use an MSD or Crane box for, and that's why it's not needed in an MS setup. However, if you desire some other feature of those CD boxes (multiple spark, capacitive discharge, etc.) then you should be able to use it instead of the GM HEI ignition modules. I'm not aware of anyone using a setup like this on the 420A yet but I'm wiring mine up as we speak and hopefully within a week or so I can tell you how and if it works.

It IS a stand-alone. It controls all fuel and ignition functions independently of the stock ECU. You'll want to leave the stock ECU connected though, as it controls the IAC, Speedo, and a few other minor functions.
