41, slick and those runnin squirt

my q is i have a crane ignition that is sittin in the garage that hasnt been installed yet. i know that the squirt will control ignition and spark so is there a need for this? i would like to put some high boost on her since it is built up to do so. just wondering,. thanks ben

also any new goodies with the squirt that are gettin ready to be revieled? inquiring minds want to kno. :) also it seems that the squirt is heading the direction of a stand alone, is it capable of that or am i lost in thought? thanks again as always.

You don't have to use a CD box (like MSD, Crane, etc.) for the Megasquirt ignition stuff to work. GM HEI ignition modules are used to trigger the coils. The Megasquirt has full control over the spark. This means that you can retard, advance, and program the spark map to do whatever the hell you want it to do. This is normally what guys use an MSD or Crane box for, and that's why it's not needed in an MS setup. However, if you desire some other feature of those CD boxes (multiple spark, capacitive discharge, etc.) then you should be able to use it instead of the GM HEI ignition modules. I'm not aware of anyone using a setup like this on the 420A yet but I'm wiring mine up as we speak and hopefully within a week or so I can tell you how and if it works.

It IS a stand-alone. It controls all fuel and ignition functions independently of the stock ECU. You'll want to leave the stock ECU connected though, as it controls the IAC, Speedo, and a few other minor functions.

You know how you have to retard timing on an advanced timing ecu like AF/X if you boost it? Can the MS retard the timing on the af/x if you got a turbo on it hence allowing you to retain the af/x ecu without an MSD or Crane igniton box?

thanks dougie, sounds like fun. definately let me know if it is needed. how much boost u planin on running? just curious i wish we could see some dyno numbers on a ms equiped car. that would show alot to some about how well the tuning capability is and to show it is kick ass. not that i dont believe in it i know that some dont.

people ask too many questions about this.

www.megasquirt.info - read up. like the rest of us did.

grain i just asked because it has been a minute since i have seen anything about this. i have heard some were talking about doin this and that with it. just was curious. thanks for the link tho, hopefully it will make some since to me, the electronics is difficult, if it is about audio im there but this ecu management and stuff is different to me. sorry bout that. :)
thanks i still wish some would post some dyno numbers on the squirt ????????

thanks for all the info guys. cant wait till it gets all figured out. not having a stock ecu will be great especially for around 300 or so. :)

It is not stand alone if you still have the PCM connected. The whole concept of stand-alone is to get rid of the PCM and control everything..I know the MS controls 90% of it and might take over the whole thing in the future but as of now it is not..I'm sure Slick will figure it out though..Makes me wish I would of taken more electronics classes in college.

look here no more PCM!

The MS can control everything you need to run the car. Automatic idle speed control is not a necessity, and neither is a speedometer. it'll do fan control, ignition, and fueling. Just about everything else can be eliminated if you so desire.

How are YOU getting a speed signal with your AEM ?

It CAN control an IAC, just not the stock IAC currently. However, you could swap it out for a supported unit. It'd just require a little fabrication.

Very little fabrication, you could tap right into the EGR inlet on the upper intake manifold. But that's where I put my IAC. ;)

If you have a AFX Ecu ya may as well sell it. The MS replaces and effectively nullifies anything the AFX ecu would do, and that's basically just an ignition timing adjustment.

ive read megasquirt.info, but i didnt see it explicitly mentioned anywhere, what kinda rev limiter does the MSnS (that IS what you use right?) use? like fuel cut or spark cut or some kinda combination, soft touch or stutterbox-style?

You guys are ignoring the main function of a CD box. Stronger/longer spark.

Especially under boost you want a good solid spark that is less likely blow out. I would not run high boost without a CD box.

The staged rev limits are a nice feature for launching and a more gentle rev limit than the way the stock ECU does it. Buit the primary reason is better, stronger spark.
