2640, Megasquirt 3 Wire Install? Posted by thamobster15781, Oct-08-06 03:38 PM
hey ive been interested in megasquirt for some time be have heard the install horror stories.well just the other day a very good source told me he installed it on a customers car and it only took an hour.they sent the unit out to have it built and said when recieved they only needed to hook up 3 wires.he also said the only thing needed to get to adjust timing was a 4g63 igniter box.is this all true.can this install be this easy for something so nice.thanks

The only external connections mine has to the factory wiring are crank position signal (tach), battery power, and a switched power source to turn the unit on with the car.
You still have to build a wiring harness for it, which includes injectors, ignitor, coil, TPS, coolant and air temp sensors.

hey i was just wondering how hard it was to do the harness.is it something that can be done easily or is it a pain.do u know anyone who either makes the harnesses or would make me a harness if i were to get megasquirt.and once this is installed is it as simple as just plugging in the harness and running those 3 wires?thanks

Lol, not even close. You will be: drilling tapping, running wire, running vacuum hoses, soldering, heatshrinking, looming, possibly welding (new O2 bung if wideband), connecting sensors, connecting relays, flashing ROMs, and programming megatune.
Even if someone builds you a harness you still have to solder it to all the sensor pigtails and wiring the injectos, power circuits etc.
If you want a 3 wire mod then get a gauge or even the SAFC-2, its more than 3 wires but simpler.

ah well that just took the wind out of my sails.i was hoping it wasnt a rediculus install.figured it was to good to be true.is there any how tos for our cars on here or anywhere explaining the install in depth.and hom much money in extras would u say it is after the megasquirt is purchased.i know u need a 4g63 ignitor.anything else?

How many injectors do you have? thats more than 3 wires right there.
but seriously, other than the tuning its pretty simple. And thats not rocket science but I'm still having problems that arise every now and then.

Don't get too discouraged. It really isn't so bad. You will learn so much valuable information.
Just a note:
You do not need to:
1. drill or tap anything ->He was refering to the coolant and air temp sensors (you can setup MegaSquirt to use the stock coolant/ air temp sensors)
2. or weld an O2 bung (you don't really 'need' an oxygen sensor) You can even just use the factory one: Narrowband
You can purchase premade standard wiring harnesses. You will need to run somewhere along the lines of 24 wires.
There is: Lots of software support -> forums.2gnt.com ; www.msefi.com Lots of hardware support -> forums.2gnt.com ; www.msefi.com
Reason #1 to do it: Don't you want to be able to change the fuel on-the-fly and hear the exhaust note change while waiting for 4 double cheese burgers (tuning food) in the drive through?
Nothing but a great learning experience comes out of playing with megasquirt.

You can also use tee's for the extra sensors.

I seriously wouldn't use a tee on the IAT sensor... :rolleyes

Why you gotta be a killjoy, deej? :order
I started my install 18 months ago and still haven't finished it. But I'm a lazy ho-bag and have been driving on a blown head gasket about that long too, so whatever.
Here is a few pictures of my harness being yanked out and redone last fall when I realized I had run all my 12VDC wires for the injectors into the cabin instead of to a relay in the engine bay. I don't know shit about MS except that it's the best priced, best functioning, best value for tuning a modified 2GNT currently available.

Sorry this is what I meant.

Remove the vacuum tree, replace it with the MS IAT, same threads, then T off the stock IAT port for the vacuum tree and the stock IAT. Not the prettiest but you don't have to drill and tap.
