1715, MegaSquirt purchasing questions Posted by evotunedscc, Jan-05-06 11:05 AM
I plan on buying MS from www.rs-autosport.com preassembled. Right now I'm thinking the MegaSquirt ECU combo kit - MS 3.0, 420a/neon wasted for $435.
This includes the MS with v3.0, wasted spark (dont really understand what this is), and MegaSquirt'n Spark software, the harness, and 3-bar map sensor.
I've got a laptop to adjust settings, I still need to get the zeitronix but I'll wait to install the ms after i've gotten that.
Will this be suffice for 300hp/17lbs? Anything else that I need with MS?> Can someone tell me which type of tach input i'll need for 99 model rs?

wasted spark means that all the coils fire at once since only so many cylinders are on the compression stroke at once only those plugs on that stroke ignite the fuel
the other plug spark is "wasted"
as far as the hp range it depends on your injectors

the injectors are 450s... i know they'll pretty well reach 300hp as a max and they shouldn't be near 100%. I'm just trying to make sure i've got everything covered as far as the ms goes

be carful, mine were close to 90% DC at 16 or so psi...not saying it can't be done, just be carful...you don't want a misfire or a stuck injector at those levels...

And read the whole MS website 3 times over.

Don't forget your coolant temp and air intake temp sensor. Some guys will get the injector harnesses so if you have to go back to stock you can just unplug the ms and plug your stock ecu back in. Emissions in my state would go crazy if my ecu wasn't showing injectors.

FPR= fuel pressure REGULATOR

Lots of people have approached 100% for injector duty cycle, it won't damage the injector or the ECU driving it if it only happens rarely for short durations. Although, it's still not a good idea. Anything more than ~90-95% depending on the injector, fuel pressure, price of tea in China, etc... the injector will probably be stuck open (100%), which means you just lost a good deal of fueling precision.

If you are going to be doing ignition control with the MS, you will need to tap the crankshaft angle signal wire. For fuel only you can either use the crankshaft angle wire or the tachometer wire.

Also, don't waste extra money on the zietronix wideband. I used to have it, it is a good system, but it is redundant when using megasquirt.
Get the innovative LC-1, $200 for a small wideband controller and O2 sensor kit. It uses the same VW wideband sensor as the zietronix and is a smaller/cleaner install.

Zeitronix rules. I love the extra inputs it allows you to have which let me get rid of my EGT gauge. I didnt bother with the LCD display because i just have it display on my indash carputer.
