99573, 1995 to 1997 ECU (some homework done) Posted by Xtacy, Jun-29-06 10:12 AM
Hi,
I've been reading different ECU posts on the board but none have given a conclusive answer to the following:
Can I use a 1997 ECU in a 1995?
Now, I know the connectors are different. But, can I rewire a new connector to the old wiring?
Here is a page I made with the 1995 and 1997 pinouts from the main site, with the cross reference for every pin I could figure out. If it is possible to use the 1997 ECU, could you visit that link and perhaps help out with what's left?
Reason for all of this, after reading about the defects in the 1995 ECU and how some people are on their 3rd ECU, and mine is dead, I don't want to deal with another 1995 ECU and am willing to put in the work of changing the wiring over to 1997.
Thank You! Kevin

Ive never heard of any common/typical problems with the 95. Dont waste your time, just use s 95. Your not reading stuff about the turbo eclipse ECU are you? The crap about the bad capacitors,etc..?
Seriously get a 95, if you read about a slew of problems its probably just a fluke

Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 where thedawg spells it out
There are more, just don't want to search. There is a problem with 95.

95 ecus had a problem where at like 50 MPH the engine will suddenly die and it won't start anymore. I think there was a recall or something to fix it because it never happened to mine and I have a sticker on my car that sez that they updated something on the ECU.
Anyway I would just stick with the 95, 95s are the most different out of all the other years. Different ECU, different fuel system, different OBD functions, etc...

All,
I don't mean to be rude, but like I said in the first post, this is a question that has not really been answered. Yes, I know most people will say stick with 95, its easier etc....but I wan't to know if a 97 will work, not that it's easier to run a 95.
Sorry for the abruptness, just want to keep this on track with the original question.
Thanks, Kevin

Try it. You'll need a 97 ECU, harness connector, and a section of harness. All the sensor inputs are the same. There are emissions controls the 97s have that the 95's don't, so expect a permanent CEL. In theory, with the rightwork, there's no reason it couldn't be done.

cool, really I guess the sensors were the main concern. I figured I'd have a permanent CEL, but not too worried about that.
Darkone, did you look at the link. Any thoughts on the inconsistencies noted?
Thanks, Kevin

I can tell you red/black is the ASD relay. The rest.. you're on your own.

not to hijack the thread or anything, but im wondering if the ECU's are interchangable between the 96 & 97 years...and between models... cuz im fixin to do a atx to mtx swap w/ the running gear from a 97 avenger into my eclipse..and that'd just suck if the ecu connectors were different.

They're all different. Every year. Search button could have told you that.

There are 2 different ECU's for 95 models, depending if you have an early model 95 or a late model 95.

Is this in reference to pin-outs, or the removal of the smog/air pump thingy that was recalled and they flashed the ECU of the early models?

2 models as is in 2 different pin layouts, they arn't interchangable (unless you rewired your whole harness).

Shiza, I hope the one I bought works for mine. I assumed it had to do with the recall :wallbash

Heheh actually I've found at least 12 different models of 95 ECU if you're going by part numbers. The nice thing is that most (if not all) of the 95's are interchangable as long as the connector is the same and they get the latest flash ROM revision from the dealer.
If your chassis build date was 6/15/94 or earlier, you have the "early" 95 ECU.

You're confusing two different problems with the 95 ECU's
1) There was a recall of the PSIA system (snorkel on downpipe) only found on 95's that required an ECU reflash for smog compliance. 2) There is a problem with the manufacturing of the 95 ECU circuit boards that causes the engine to shut off while driving. Repairing the ground traces on the board is possible, but extremely tedious and time consuming.
ECU's that have been upgraded and fixed for problem #1 may still fall victim to problem #2. They're not related at all.

there's also different version of the ECU made for cali due to smog. the fuel tables an stuff are a little different. something like that. i don't think it made that big a difference.
early 95: atx fed mtx fed atx cali mtx cali
late 95: atx fed mtx fed atx cali mtx cali
