99232, what motor will work with 95 talon non turbo Posted by marc750, Jun-08-06 07:37 AM
2.0 dohc is what i have now, but i think my wife blew the motor up, she was driving it with no radiator fluid in it and she was on the freeway and it just stopped, now when you go to start it, it sounds like it has asthma or something, not sure what to do, a few people keep saying to change the head, then a few people say to change the whole motor out, if so, what other motor will work with this car, neons have the same motor, but someone said it will not work. please help

It is hard to say without taking it apart, but it definately sounds like little or no compression. I would check the compression first, but from what you are saying, it is probably a warped head which means headgasket time. It could also be a burned valve or piston causing lack of compression.
The only thing you can use from a neon is the block. The head is reversed. If you get a neon block, make sure it is a first generation. The DOHC motors have the same compression as us, the SOHC is lower. You can also use a whole motor from an 95 - 99 Avenger/Sebring coupe (not convertible), or a 95-99 eclipse/talon non turbo. You could theoretically go for a 2.4 chrysler from neons/stratus sedan, but you would have to use your head with it, and do some custom work to get it to run right. You would need a custom passenger side motor mount.

Easiest solution, rebuild the motor you've got.
The motor you're looking for that will bolt right up is known as a 420a. It's the chrysler 2.0l 4 cylinder engine (yes, that's a chrysler motor in the non-turbo 95-99 eclipse) with front exhaust (neons have this motor, but with rear exhaust).
You can hunt for a complete used motor and hope it's okay, or spend $1000 and rebuild the one that's in it and start fresh with a new motor.

I bet you could spend less than that, if you rebuilt with stock internals. Google "Parts Dinosaur" and check out his site for new, stock internal components. His prices are excellent and so is his service. :thumbsup

Yeah, but I was assuming they'd take it somewhere. Not sure if they're a DIY'er or not.
