99068, Cleaned My TB Today
Posted by Dsm98Nt, Jun-01-06 05:58 AM
Last night i was just doing some researching and came across throttle body cleaning. so this morning i took it off and the whole thing is covered in oil on the inside part of it. I dont know if thats normal but i cleaned it all out put it back on and drove down my street and you can really notice the difference.. but when i put it in neutral coming to a stop it idles at like 2100rpms. when i completely stop the idle goes to normal. its only when im rolling in neutral. im thinking its just cuz i took everything apart. The CEL is on because of taking it apart most likely so ill just wait alittle while and see what happens.

Im also wondering if anyone knows how to polish the top of the intake manifold.. so that it is crome like. I saw a post that someone had it done but i cant find it.. if anyone can lead me in the right direction of how to do it. that would be awesome! Thanks

If your idle is that high you probabally have a vaccum leak. Did you change the throttle body gasket when you took it off? Also check to make sure that your throttle plate is closing all the way. Your cable might be too tight causing the plate not too close all the way. You can adjust by unbolting the bolts on the cable bracket and sliding the cable left or right. It is normal to get gunked up from the Crankcase breather tube, some small amounts of oil are going to come out. That is why people install catch cans or breather filters on that and the PCV valve.

As for the intake manifold polishing it takes a whole, whole, whole lot of sanding. Start with like a 60 grit, then use 100, then 120, then 150, then 220, then 400, then wetsand it with 800, 1000, 1500, and if you feel like it use 2000. For the wetsanding, just make sure it has enough water, keep the surface wet and keep the sandpaper wet. You want it to be completely smooth in the end with no scratches from sanding. Then I would recommend a rubbing compound to get rid of all the swirls and sand marks. Then just polish the shit out of it. I bought a rouge polishing set at Sears with 4 different bars of polish for different metals. It also came with polishing wheels.

It could be too loose then not allowing it to close fast enough. I would double check it. Just take the intake tube off of the throttle body to check. Also, you might want to buy some rtv or I used copper gasket maker in the tube as a sealant just to be extra sure you won't leak there. Make sure you get the surface nice and clean and smooth.

X2 on the gasket,. try doing this: put ur hand around the area where the gasket is nad feel for leaks, i know when i took mine a part the gasket turned to shit, i went and did this, and the vaccum almost pinched off a piece of my palm...maybe exagerating, but ull feel it.

A high idle when rolling with the clutch disengauged is normal. My car has done this since it was new. Well maybe not at 2100, more like 1500-1700.

Yeah, mine idles at like 1200 rpms when I am rolling in neutral, then when I stop it drops to normal. Never figured out why it does that, but oh well.

Oh and I don't think Exile "Ports and polishes" the valve cover lol
