98843, Need help, cars running like crap. Posted by EclipsedOut, May-18-06 02:19 PM
I just finished putting the motor back in my 95 RS this morning, Its all fresh. When I went to start it it fired but would not stay running unless I stepped on the gas and then was missing on idle. Now I took it to the gas station down the road (4 miles) and it stalled at the first stop sign, turned it over, gave it some gas and it started. Got a few gallons of gas and on the way home it started missing and bucking on acceleration. I got home and checked for vacum leaks with starting fluid, everything was fine there. I changed the fuel filter while the motor was out. It was a Fram and the arrow(flow) pointed down toward the floor. Is that right?? It has a CEL so I did the key thing and if I counted right its 1-2-3-4-3-4-3. The CEL has been light every since I got the car 5 or 6 years ago. Thanks for any help.

I think you messed up writing down the keydance. Chances are you have a double "43," which is an active misfire in multiple cylinders. I'd be willing to bet your timing ins't right.
You need to recheck that and make sure your ASD/fuel relays are fully plugged in.
EDIT: If it sounds like a Harley at idle, you done fucked up the timing or have an injector issue (but with a 43 code, I bet it's timing).

Thanks for the info. I tried changing plugs, wires, coil it seemed to help, I also checked the compression they were all between 150 and 160. I took it for a few short rides and it seems to get better each time I drive it. At an idle it sounds like its "cammed up" but that is getting better also. It only hesitates on acceleration once its warmed up and like I said thats clearing up each time I drive it. Its wierd. I'm thinking it has something to do with the fuel. I put a new fram fuel filter on while the motor was out and when the car first broke down last summer my first thought was fuel pump so I took that apart and maybe some dirt fell in. I hope its the combo. of me taking the fuel pump out, a new filter and the fact that it had about a 1/4 tank of gas sitting in it for 10 months. I put about 8 gal. of super in it yesterday I'll put some injection cleaner in it and run it some more and hope it clears up. I was told the first 2 #'s on the keydance are always 1-2, so I guess the code would be 3-4-3-4-3. Man I sure hope its not the timing. Thanks again.

The first two numbers in the dance are 1-2, but it's always an even number of digits and typically ends with 5-5. Furthermore, while there is no code "34" listed on the home page, there is a fairly common one, "43," that has symptoms much like the ones you describe.
If it's timing, I doubt it would get any better, so let's hope its just bad gas. If you got dirt in the tank, you might have to change to a new filter already. Consider how clean gas is to begin with, most fuel filters are designed to remove ultra fine particualtes from the fuel. If you've got visible dirt in the tank, that's going to be a very bad thing.

OK i might have the solution for ya!! if you have a A/F gauge check the wiring to the o2 sensor becaus that just might be your problem you could have melted wire inbetween that might be throwing off your system.

Yeah I hope its bad gas. I'm going away for the weekend I'll try some inj. cleaner when I get home Mon. morning.
Prime one, I doubt its that, the car was working great untill the belt went and its been doing this since I started the new motor. I'll check just in case though. Thanks.

I drove the car last night and it ran great untill it came up to normal temp and then it started hesitating, only when under acceleration and only in 3rd,4th and 5th gear(a little in 2nd) between 2,500 and 3,500 RPM's. I changed the EGR and took it for a ride and it seemed to be a little better. I took it out again this morning and it ran great even once it got hot. It still idles a little rough but I think it fixed itself. I think I'll name her Christine. :shrug

ECU uses coolant temp sensor to determine fuel trims. If the engine is truely cold and the ECU is trying to warm it up, it will run fine. If the engine is actually warm and the ECU is still trying to warm things up...
CLTs are a commonly overlooked culprit.

I just got home from a ride, went about 50 miles and it worked great the whole time. Its still idling a little rough. What should the idle be?? Its idling at 800 RPM. How do you adjust the idle?? Is it the screw/stop on the throttle linkage?? Where is the CLT located? Just in case. Thanks
