98788, NO SPARK!!! NO POWER!!!
Posted by mitueclipesturbo, May-16-06 07:04 AM
I just replaced my cams with crane cams and cam gears. I went to start it and it turned over but would not start. I check for spark but there was nothing. So i took my MSD coil off and put my stock one back on. Tried again turned over but would not start. So i went and tested the coils with ohms meter.

Primary showed .00. on both. Then i check the volts on the harrness and it said 0.00. Is there supposed to be voltage from the harrness.

Could i have put the cam senor in the wrong way. Can some body help i am losing my mind.

Sure the timing is set right?? just a suggestion..

hey,

i just got done checking the main power to the ecu and i only have 4.5 volts. i check the timing and it all lines up.

i bet you have one cam 180 out of time. set your crank to TDC, and take your valve cover off. check to make sure the 2 holes are facing up on the top of the camshafts.

The plug that plugs into your coil should have 12v to ground. if you dont have any voltage then you have other issues. Do the crane cams have the holes in the cams?

My Crowers did.

I bet its a bad battery terminal. Had the same thing happen to me once.

My Crane turbo cams do.

The cam holes lined up.

Okay. Do you have any DTC codes?

no, not that i know of. are those the pcm codes. just 12 and 55

Okay, what are codes 12 and 55?

12 and 55 are basically start of codes and end of codes, so you have no codes.

well 12 is acutally that you have had the battery unhooked in the last 50 key cycles

i have no power to the coil on the center prong. I am thinking that it is the asd relay but i dont know what that does. Also i have no volts going to #6 on the pcm which says that it is from the asd relay.

I didn't realize you have been chasing this same problem in this forum too.

http://forums.2gnt.com/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=4&topic_id=85109&mesg_id=85109&page=

I will continue my posting here by copying my comments from my last post in the "General Forum".

Please don't post the same problem in more than one forum or at least end one of the threads and redirect people to the continuing thread in the correct forum once you realize they are both the same problem.

I don't think the ASD relay is bad but it is possible. It probably is not being turned on because the PCM thinks there is another problem, like maybe a bad sensor?

This is really much more likely than a bad relay since I just came from the other thread where you didn't mention to me you had the cams taken out of the vehicle.

You can check the ASD relay by grounding pin #4 and listening for a "click". You can do this test with the ignition key on or off, it won't matter. When the relay closes it should supply power to the center pin #2 of the ignition coil.

Removed from the vehicle you could check the relay further.

On the ASD relay, pins #4 and #6 are the relay coil and pins #2 and #8 are the switch. Pins #2 and #8 should not be connected when the relay is off.

Pin #67 on the PCM is the wire that supplies a ground signal to the ASD relay. I'm guessing that a bad sensor is why the PCM is not turning on the ASD relay.

Okay

I read your post and grounded the relay and the was no click i also tried another relay and it still has no power to the coil.

I still think this problem is somehow related to the camshaft change but let's continue to check out the ASD relay since you believe it is still not getting power.

Check the photos below. Let's be sure we are talking about the correct relay. Under the hood as you are facing the motor, just to the right of the brake fluid reservoir should be either 2 or 3 relays. If you have an automatic tranny there will be three relays and the ASD relay is in the middle. If you have a 5-speed then the ASD relay is the one on the right. The photo is of course a 5-speed and there are two relays shown. Note that the color of the ASD relay connector is grey. The fuel pump relay connector on the left is black.

I labeled the pins for you to check. #6 and #8 should always have 12 volts on them anytime the battery is connected in the car. It doesn't matter if the key is on or off. If you do not have voltage on those pins then the 30A Fusible relay #4 we discussed earlier must not have power and you should go back and look there again.

Pin #4 on the ASD relay connector will be grounded when the PCM commands the ignition system to operate. To test it you of course would have to plug the socket back into the relay and probe it from the bottom with a grounded wire to simulate a ground from the PCM to test if the relay clicks and is working okay.

Pin #2 will have 12 volts only when the relay is energized (pin #4 grounded).

Double check the above. I still find it unlikely that you have no power at the ASD relay but maybe a wire got pulled loose during the camshaft work??

hey i did the test and everything works. it has 12 volts and it clicks but i still dont have 12 volts at the coil
98950, RE: NO SPARK!!! NO POWER!!!

okay, i did further testing on it and this what i came up with.

When i jump the relay with the probe it clicks and i have power to my coil and the #2 on the relay. But when the key turned on i have no power to both.

Due you Think that it is my PCM or could it be the chassi ground.

well for some reason everytime i turn the key on my heater fuse blows. i am still trying to figure out why but could ths be my problem.

Okay, this confirms that the ASD relay is not defective.

Now, do you understand a little of how the PCM works with the sensors? Do you understand that when you turn the key, the PCM will only supply power to the fuel pump and the ignition system for about two second if it can't detect movement of the motor?

When you are testing for power and you turn the key to the "run" position you only have a few second to see if power is there before the PCM will turn it off. You can't turn the key to "run" and then go out under the hood and measure for voltage. You will need to hook up a meter or a test light to the coil plug center pin and watch for voltage as you turn the key. You should hear the relays click on and off at the very beginning of the test. Is the fuel pump trying to run when you first turn the key?

If you try to start the motor the PCM will again supply power to the relays IF AND ONLY IF the PCM can detect movement of the motor. If you damaged or messed up the sensors when you were working on the cams the exact poroblem you have will occur. Once again, I think there is nothing wrong with all the wiring you have been asking about. I have to believe you have installed the cams wrong or damaged a sensor when you did that work.

Can you confirm that when you first turn the key to "run" the two relays are clicking on then off after about 2 seconds?

I can't see how the heater fuse has anything to do with the original problem unless you smashed some wires together and they shorted out. I think the heater problem is unrelated.

I here two Relay clicking. Is there a to install the magnet on the cam wrong.

I've taken you as far as I can with the electrical stuff.

I have never had my cams out or had them timed wrong so I'm not sure how to coach you from here. Do some searching for cam position sensors and cam install problems and see what you find.

okay i am stupid. I put the adj cam gears on and did the timing. I figured that the marks on the cam gears should both be on top. While i went and took the valve cover off and found that the intake cam has the hole up top and the exhaust has the hole on the bottom. so i turned the cam so that the hole is on top and now the adj marks are on the bottom. is this the way it supposed to be.

look at the pic
