Well I just got my block back from the machine shop. I had them do all the machine work including the assembly. When I got it back I looked at the seal between the bedplate and the block and the sealant is kind of an orangish color. The gasket kit comes with a tube of silicone sealant that's the same orangish color. My question is did they use anaerobic sealant for the bedplate or did they use the silicone sealant in the gasket kit? Can anaerobic sealant only be a red color?

I know anerobic comes in red and green, not sure on "orangish" though..If you can see the leftover sealant, run your finger on it, it should not be "dry", it should still be gooey..if it is, then its anerobic.

It's not really gooey, it basically feels like silicone. This is worrying me a bit now. Silicone sealant on the bedplate isn't safe rite?

agreed. I would be real concerned about that o ring that fits between the bedplate and block as well. Anaerobic sealant is used so that the proper tolerances can be met between the bedplate and block. with a regular gasket maker or sealant it wont seal as tight and might cause the main bearing surfaces to not mate up perfectly causing an out of round situation and premature wear and possibly spinning one of those bearings.

Yeah, if its dry and "rubbery" like silicone, then i hightly doubt its the anerobic sealant. I would NOT run that engine until you find out for sure. Take it back to the machine shop.

yea seriously. When i put mine together, i had excess red anearobic squeezing out of it. It stayed gooey till this day (1 month later) and its been running fine.

silicone, 'rubbery' sealant wont do well on our cars at all. the bedplate must be installed with correct clearances and no variations in assembly.

take it back, get your cuss words ready... :)

Real anaerobic will almost always be a dark cherry red. It will ALWAYS be wet and sticky no matter what the color, never dried or rubbery. The green anaerobic is Mopar's special formula, but very rare since it costs 2x more than Loctite's formula for no real reason.

Take it back.

Instead of taking it back...make them credit you back some of the money you spent there. Than go rent/buy a torque wrench and finish the job yourself. Who knows what those fuc-tards will do worng the second time!

The machine shop I used actually reminded me to use anaerobic sealant and not silicone...that boosted my confidence in them a little (of course I put my own stuff together). By the way....do not forget the o-ring between the block and bed plate (see pic above).
