98514, ...another crank, crank, and crank no start thread Posted by XMasta19, May-07-06 05:47 PM
Yeah, so here we go...
I figured I would solve this problem without having to post, but I'm getting tired of it. I'm not one for just buying bunches of parts instead of troubleshooting down to a particular fault, so I've done bunches of research on the subject.
I found and repaired a few random wires that were burned/melted by the egr of course. If I turn the key to on position, the fuel pump will not prime. When I start to crank, I hear it turn on for a brief second and turn back off. Both the coil pack and fuel pump will flash 10 volts for a second then drop back to zero. If I jumper both the relay connectors so that the fuel pump is constantly on and coil pack has full voltage...car still does not start.
Took a wire out and put a spare plug in it, grounded to the valve cover, and didn't have any spark. Checked timing, looked good. I really feel like it's some dumb short or ground somewhere, but I just can't seem to figure it out. I know there are better wiring gurus then myself, and you guys will be able to tell me exactly what wires to test etc...fyi, I have a 95.
I guess I'm done typing now, I'll answer more ?'s as they arise. I'm just tired of missing my car...minus the two weeks in January when it was -45 degrees, I haven't driven my car since blowing it up in August. Summer is all of 3 months here in my lovely home of Alaska, and it's passing me by...end of rant.

When you jumper the ASD relay and Fuel pump relay, both items do power up correct?
Check your fuses for one. Next check the plug at your Cam sensor, you should have a 5v reference and a 9v reference. the remaining wire is ECU signal wire. If you are missing one of those voltages then that is a lead to the problem.
Open up the harness completely where it was burned and make sure your not missing a wire damaged. It is very possible one of those burned wires blew a fuse or fuseable link.
Check to see if you have injector pulse.
You havent not wired in the MS harness yet have you?

When I jumper the relays, the fuel pump stays on and I get the voltage to center pin on coil pack connector. What fuses are you speaking of...all of the fusible links are good, have checked them many times. When and where on the cam sensor am I supposed to be checking for these 5 and 9 volt references. I have ripped out a bunch of the loom and have the wires all spread for checking the burnt/melted spots. How am I supposed to check if I have injector pulse? As for the MS...it's still sitting in my living room lolz.
EDIT: With the key in the on position, I have a 5v signal on one of the cam sensor connector pins. I did not have the 9v signal on the center pin...or am I supposed to actually have someone cranking at this time?
EDIT #2: I have like 4.98v on one side, and 8.88v on the other side...I guess those would be my 5 and 9 volt reference signals.

Ok you have proper voltages at the cam which means the ECU is outputting the sensor voltages. Fuel pump kicks on so you have 12v to the relays as you are supposed to.
Injector pulse, you want to use a testlight between the 2 wires of the injector plug. When cranking the light should flicker.
Edit, do a key dance to see if you have any stored codes during cranking. Also, i told you the third wire at the cam was the ECU signal wire, its not, it's a ground, my mistake. Check the third wire to be a ground, it will be black with a green strip IIRC.

I know I have code 11. The center wire (B/G) continuity checked good from cam sensor to ecu pin. I will have to pick up a test light and try out the injector pulse at lunch time.

Where the heck can I get a test light from...damn Alaska, can't I just use a multimeter lolz :shrug

Napa should have one, hell I got one from Wal-Mart.

the center pin B/Gr should be ground, check the continuity to ground.

Isn't that the same as connecting positive lead of dmm to battery positive, then hooking negative lead to the center pin...I got 12 volts, that means I have ground correct.

Yes thats correct, you made the comment about checking that wire to the ECU pins and that confused me because the ground does not go directly to the ECU.
I know you had to replace your trans and the cr has sat for a long period of time but is there any way you swapped the coil and speed sensor plugs?

There's no way my coil pack and speed sensor wires could have gotten switched because the speed sensor has loom all the way while the coil pack wiring is distinguished from repairs back in the day. So, I know I have the ground at center pin, and both references voltages for the cam position sensor. Even when jumping the relays, car still does not start. I need to find myself a test light so that I can check for injector pulse....but besides that, I have no idea where to turn next :shrug

Grounded plugs to the valve cover to check for spark...nothing. Selling the car is never an option, but damn it sure as hell is upsetting to be down for so long. Help me!!!
Terry, are ya busy...I'm gonna have to fly your ass up to Alaska lolz

...so, from reading other threads...all the main grounds could cause intermittent problems/issues I would suppose. Two summers ago, my car died randomly and electtronics went a lil crazy, then car wouldn't start again....replaced the ground from battery to chassis and fix it all good. Is it possible one of the other main grounds could have just took a shit? I know there's the one on the tranny/starter correct? I believe that would be the only one that was really messed with when I swapped transmissions. Where exactly are the other main ones...I seem to be having a major brain fart with all these damn wiring problems.
EDIT: pics would be a plus, I'm really curious if I hooked it back up wrong

the one on the tranny just goes from the battery to the trans bolt.

Ok...that's what I thought. I guess I have that one right...but there has to be some stupid ground or short somewhere I'm missing :shrug I don't know anyone up here with a 95 ecu that I can just try out, or let alone anyone who would even let me plug in their cam/crank sensors to check if that fixes my problems either.
