98371, what's causing no acceleration problem? Posted by ggaarryy, May-02-06 05:03 AM
97 eclipse spyder 2.4 non turbo manual with 130k miles.
For the past few months, when shifting through all the gears, there would be a slight hesitation when accelerating even though the rpms raced up a bit then settled back in and the car then seemed normal.
Today, however, the problem got notceably worse to the point that I got almost no acceleration even though the rpms zoom up before settling in at a much higher level and I am now smelling a burning smell -- I was barely able to nurse it back to my house. Also, when I start it up, there seems to be a puff of dark smoke that comes from under the transmission.
Engine seems to run fine otherwise, shifting through the gears seems no different other than the lack of acceleration -- no misfiring and check engine light isn't on. Clutch fluid level is okay although its a bit dark and it shift fine. I have never checked/replaced the manual transaxel fluid although I haven't noticed any fluids leaking from under the car ever.
Any thoughts as to what the problem might be?
