98262, 350 Engine Posted by igounfazed, Apr-28-06 04:34 PM
I would like you guys experience with something.
Just today, I was offered a 350 engine, transmission, etc. to me for free.
My initial thought was: What am I going to do with a 350 engine when I have a 97 talon?!
You see where I am going with this right?
Have any of you guys here ever heard of a dsm with a 350 engine in it?
I don't really want to know what would need to be done to have one in my talon. (if you want to comment on it though, you're more than welcome to.)
I would like to know though if ANYONE has ever heard of such a thing in any DSM.
Thanx in advance for your knowledge!

A 350z engine? I've never heard of it, and it would be an EXTREMELY large and costly undertaking to make it work, if it could even fit in the first place. It's not worth it, just sell it.

I think it's an actual engine that's 350 cubic inches, like a domestic V8. Not a 350Z motor.
I'd just take the motor and sell it to my neighbors in Texas. They'll take it.
And yes, I've heard of it. Seen it? Nope.

Never heard of it and probably never will. Not worth the time or money. Get it from him and then sell it. Not a very bright idea. You have to make it rwd along with fit everything in our small engine bay.

You can probably put it in your trunk and drive around with it there but other than that id have to say noway. Theres just to much that you would have to change out

Don't do it.

in regards to whats going to need to be done...you're going to need to back half it, move the firewall back, mount the motor, transmission and differential at the right angles, change the rear suspension, steering system, strengthen the rest of the chassis, shorten whatever axle housing you go with, custom length axles, ,etc etc. if you've never done a back half before, don't even think about jimmy hacking it together. there are a lot of things to know while doing a project like this.
ive tinkered with the idea of a 440 hemi, new 6.1 hemi, or the dodge viper motor, transmission and rear end all fabricated to work in my 96 talon...one day im sure ill do it. count on that. it'll be a tube chassis though, and i'll build the whole thing. i want to keep it mopar. i really like the viper motors and i get to work on them a lot at work, but it's a weird decision. probably go with the viper motor and a dry sump though. suspension is a tough decision too, but i have a lot of options.
the fact is, you could turn that talon into a rock crawler if you really wanted...but if you have no idea how, its not going to get done right.
my advice is sell it, and get some money. you can make your car plenty fast as it is and not change a whole lot.

All he said is true...
I myself was toying with that idea many times over the years, the car has the looks, why not some raw power to go with it? It has been done to a focus, why not a 2GNT?

I dont recall Dodge ever making a 440hemi. Unless its a new production motor, they never did.

maybe not dodge, but plymouth had one in the Barracuda.
**EDIT** What about the Belvedere or the Dodge Daytona? I'm pretty sure there was a 440 hemi in there. Of course, I'm used to the 440 magnum, and maybe I'm confusing the two.
**EDIT 2**
But what about the 440 Six-Pak cars?
And as far as that GM 350 cid pushrod V8, those things are a dime a dozen. Parts are in abundance and cheep, though, and you could easily build a very powerful motor out of it, but please, don't put it in anything but a GM chassis.
**EDIT 3, LOL** After googling it, I found that there was a prototype hemi 440 that was derived from the 426 for use in the 300, but I don't think it was ever put in production.

if they can get a ford v8 in a miata i think we can do it too but there is a road i will never go down

None of the cars you listed were 440 hemi heads Luke. The 440 came with either closed or open chamber heads. The only motor mopar produced with a hemi heads that was over 400CI was the 426 hemi. Since mopar production the Hemi has been built aftermarket into a 528 Hemi, but no 440 Hemi.
You have to be careful googling because people like to mention the 440 and hemi 4 speed. the hemi 4 speed trans is an upgrade for the 440 and 383 4 speed. spline counts differed and the case was more robust.
The 300 in 56 got a 331 Hemi that produced 300hp, hence the name 300.
Edit: the 440CI hemi was only a 426 bored over and didnt have the side bolts for the main caps so it wasnt a true 440. The RB block of a 440 to my knowledge will not allow Hemi heads to be bolted onto it due to valvetrain issues.
I haver looked through all my Resto books as well as nostalgia books and there was never a 440 hemi even as a true designed prototype.

I guess that's where I got confused, I remembered something about a 440 hemi 4-speed in a daytona. I knew the 440 in the chargers wasn't a hemi, but that's about it. Thanks for clearing it up, after I read about it being a prototype for the 300 and never being produced, I was a little confused.

Ive talked about doing this to my eclipse 2 years ago with a couple guys. It would be very F***in cool to see my car pull up next to you at a light, mini-tubbed, skinnys in the front and watch the whole car rock when i hit the gas. It would be a sight. And when you look in the window you see a small block in the back. Well we basically came to the conclusion that all we would be using from my car would be the body. You would have to find a rolling chassis that can except a 350 and drop your body on it. Of course there is a lot more to it then that but you get my point. One day... i will do this.

I am still considering the option. I should have included that its for FWD. Would that make any difference to your opinions?

im talking about taking a wedge block using 426 heads, its a lot lighter...and cheaper. maybe even stroke it to like 500+. a beast like that even stock on a stock like 69' crank could hold 850~hp and thats a little ridiculous. anyway come on ive already hacked enough mopar blocks and heads together to be able to mix and match with other shit, keeps things more interesting.
anyway i really like the viper v10 though, its a sick little beast when you dive into it. i wouldnt mind a cool 600~ ft lbs before boost on pump gas in a tube chassis on a race track every few sundays a month
i laughed when i thought about the only thing being stock in my car after a swap like that is the oil filter :nuts
edit: oh, and a GM 350 with 4t60 or some shit in a 2gnt is just hilarious, please dont do that. coronado much?
word.

Wedge block was not a 440 unless you are talking about boring it. The GM trans was 4L60 not 4t60.

4T's are used in GM FWD cars, sorry man. he asked about what we would say if it was fwd, thats why i said 350 with a 4t.
4T60 = transverse FWD 4L60 = longitudal RWD
i've rebuilt many of both.
the 440 from either the 1966-77 imperial or 69 newport is in fact a 440, standard bore RB block. Indy and Stage V do conversions for it using 426 Hemi heads. Hence, a 440 Hemi.

Ah i keep thinking 350 RWD.
That is a conversion, i thought we were talking Original equipment here. Talking about conversions is a bit of cheating dont you agree. Thats like arguing a 528 Hemi as original mopar production motor.
The 440 Hemi, Me persoanlly if i am going to identify a 440 hemi i would do it in terms of a "440 hemi conversion." Reason being is you set people who know production Mopar inside out into a search to find something that they know was never produced. I know that want the topic of the discussion but leaving out critical details like that isnt always a good thing.
My point in my statements are that a wedge block was never produced by Mopar as a 440 Hemi. The creation is aftermarket.
If we were going to go into custom design them anything is possible with the right amount of money. Kinda liek a 383 6 pack that was never produced by the factory but is now made by mopar as an aftermarket add on for 1500.00

Just like how a 2gnt with a 2.5L was never produced. Try bringing a 2.4L swapped 2gnt to Chrysler for something and watch every single one of their techs scratch their heads...then realize 'oh shit, that works doesnt it...?". A 440 Hemi wouldn't be much weirder, just mix matching.
I know what you're saying though, but if I were going to be building such a beast I wouldn't keep much of anything original equipment.

The engine does not fit. A smallblock V8 is as long as our engine is wide, and taller. in a cab-forward car with such little space in front of the firewall, you aren't going to be able to fit one in..
Unless you build a whole new chassis and drape the body of your Eclipse or whatever over it, it won't work, and by the time you have done that, you'd be $80k in the hole, with zero potential sponsorship, and a car that isn't road legal.
|
98583, RE: 350 Engine Posted by DR1665, May-09-06 09:15 AM
Just remember, he goes unphased. ;)
The only way I would begin to consider a V8 in a DSM would be if you snagged the FWD auto tranny from an older Cadillac and dropped the entire powertrain in the back of the car. Lose the current powertrain altogether and find a way to convert your car into something out of Mad Max. That's the only way I would consider it.
Just remember, if it doesn't work, you've just destroyed a perfectly good 2G...

98587, RE: 350 Engine Posted by turbo8u, May-09-06 12:02 PM
you should be ab le to build a tube chassis and power it with whatever the hell you want and not spend near 80k $....sheesh
also, in CA you can work around the laws are register whatever beast you create as an 06 or 07 specialty construction, get it reffed and tagged with a special emissions tag and be completely legal. however, when i do it....it's staying on the track and maybe come out on weekends.
dont waste your time with a 350...putting a chevy motor in a chrysler car is retarded in my opinion
lol to the rock crawler 2g, told ya you could make it into a rock crawler if you wanted :P
