98128, Lifter tick & lifter replcement ? Posted by gramozeka, Apr-23-06 04:30 PM
Hello everyone.
The problem that I have is that from reading all the posts I am paranoid about spinning bearing. So I used to have a little lifter tick in my other car and than it got louder and stayed longer and then never went away but it was still ticking noise.
Now here in the morning ( if it is chilly) I start the car and let it warm up a little 5 min or so. Only slight tick can be heard during warm up. When I start driving that tick becomes more of a banging ( loud enough that people look over when I pass them very embarrassing) and noise goes away after the car is fully warmed up. If this was a span bearing it wouldn't go away right? So am I safe to diagnose this as lifter problem?
This brings me to my second question I read about the big-screwdriver method of changing the lifters but can not find a write up. Can some one help me out with the procedure on this?
Thanks

Not sure about the problem, but here is the writeup http://www.vfaq.com/mods/lifters.html. Did it on my 4g63, worked well.

Also hit up the FAQ for the Seafoam treatment on 4G63s. Sometimes, the carbon build up on the springs/valves/whatever can make a similar noise. If you're going to get in there, you might as well consider upgrading to the 3rd gen lifters. Parts Dinosaur has them.

3rd gen lifters? what gen are pt cruiser lifters?
I was going to get pt cruiser style from howell 110 all together. PartsDinosaur has them 140 + shipping. Any difference?
I also wonder if just cleaning the lifters (as described in vfaq) will help.
Dr1665 I know that u have the pt style lifters. But have u used the seafoam for lifters? How long did u put it in for? On their website they just say to pure it in to the oil but don't say for how long. Should it be used as a flush (for 10-15 min idling and than oil change) or for the whole duration of oil change?
