Hey guys, I'm new to the forums and I have a few questions, if anyone doesnt mind answering.

I recently bought a 95 Mitsubishi Eclipse RS from my neighbor, it has like 182000 on the motor. A week after I bought the car I needed a new rack and pinnion, and then 2 weeks after that I dropped my axle and my ball joint cracked.

Thats all taken care of and what not but since I've done the rack and maybe a little before I've had a weird knocking, at first it was only when I made right turns, now its when the car first starts and sometimes when I'm in park and rev the engine a little. The mechanic who did my rack and pinnion said it wasn't my right axle or ball joint it seemed to be something in the transmission.

Did anyone have a similar problem or maybe know what this is, I'm deciding on selling it or giving it to a friend, but I love this car and I'd only try to find another one. This is my second Eclipse/Eagle, the first car I had was a 1993 Eagle Talon ES I believe, that had major problems and it was junked.

Anyone have any ideas to what my knocking might be, one friend of mine thinks it might be a motor mount, another thinks it sounds like bearings from an altenator. The sound kind of sounds like its coming for the back by the firewall or underneath.

Any ideas, your help would be greatly appreciated.

Take your battery and tray out, and look to see if the brace that goes from the tranny to the rear motor mount ( mount is located on the crossmember near the firewall ) is broken.

As far as I know, these things can break pretty easily, especially if you get wheel hop from a hard launch.

If it is broken, you CAN replace it from the hole left by taking out the battery and battery tray.

Check it out and keep us posted.

I took the battery tray out and I looked, it definitely didn't look right, but I'm not sure what a broken mount would look like, it kind of looked like it wasn't attached, like it was bent back.

My o2 sensor went also, my check engine light came on and my friend has a pocket scanner and its my o2 sensor so I'm eventually goin to my mechanic and going to have him check/change my bottom mount and change the o2 sensor.

Random question, you know the button that tells the lights and sensor that the doors closed, how hard would that be to replace, I've noticed my drivers side doesn't work right, at some point if you bend it its works, I'm not sure if its a short, I was wondering if anyone knew where I could just get another piece and change it, if thats even possible.

Why don't you replace your O2 yourself and save a few bucks? It's really not hard at all...

Also, just go to any Mitsubishi dealer to get new door switches. They are only a couple of bucks each.

I'm going to try to replace it myself, I'm new to working on cars and such. I'm definitely going to try to do it myself though, I like being able to say I did it myself.

I wasn't sure if they had the door switches, and if it was even that I guess I could pick em up and put em in and see what happens, worst comes to worst I lost a few bucks trying to figure this out..

Any pointers on changing the O2 sensor, or any certain type I should buy, Pepboys by me had a replacement one for like 50 bucks and I figured i'd just pick that up, is that good?

The mount itself is usually not broken. Look at the brace where it connects to the tranny. The breaking point in my experience has been across the bolt holes.

The mechanic looked at the mounts and said the mounts were okay, with a little play.

Uh. I think hes a dumbass. Anyway my friend had a similar problem with his stratus, similar motor and he said it was something along the belt line, we both think its my altenator, and oddly enough my radio has a weird humming. I'm going to replace the altenator this weekend.

He thinks its the altenator because 1) the squeal the car makes when it goes on, he said it sounds like the pulley is shot and the belts just making it go. 2) the rattling is the pulley.

The other thing he said might be the rattling is something with the catalytic convertor. Any suggestions, like as to remove it or something? Clean it? Estimates on a new one, I'm thinking about removing it and just running new pipes and an exhaust, how loud would that be, any input would be great.

I'll update with info on the altenator after I figure out whats going on.

It would be pretty loud without a cat. Stock cats are not too terribly expensive from an autoparts store like Advance Auto, Pep Boys or Autozone.

AFAIK, there is no way to clean a cat.

May just be a heat shield, at one point mine were making a horrible mettalic rattling when at idle.

It doesnt matter to be honest, I got into a really bad accident with the car and have to total it. I'm really sorry for the bother to anyone I've been, I'll post pictures if you guys want, my whole frame and chasity is bent, my whole right side is destroyed. It was a very sad day to say the least.

Yeah I'm okay, thankfully all the damage was the passengers side and I was riding alone. I'm really sore from the whiplash I got. Heres a few pics.

Yeah so, I'm basically beat. The cop isn't filing anything cause I didn't hit any other cars or anyone. Just one of the fire hydrant barrier things. It just sucks cause I spent like 1100 on redoing the front end and now I have no money for another car.
