97762, Anyone still toying with building quad throttle body setup?
Posted by cougar694u, Apr-11-06 06:41 AM
I'm asking because I have a complete TB setup from a suzuki hayabusa. My car's gone, so I won't be messing with it.

It's got vacuum ports that come together and are designed to hook to a MAP sensor, as well as extra vacuum ports (2 ports per TB, 1 from each is tied together for the MAP).

Each TB is 46 mm. If they're enought to flow a 1298 cc motor at 11k+ RPM, they should be okay on 1997cc at >7500 RPM.

It also has the throttle position sensor & 4 injectors, which I think are a mere 270cc/min, but with this fuel rail ( http://www.injector.com/fuelrails.php ), you can use just about anything.

Anyone interested in kicking around some ideas?

Someday, man. Someday...

Sounds so delicious, imo. I know you've read some of the ITB threads on Neons.org like I have. Those guys are nuts. They say the sound is amazing. I hope to do this one day. I'll probably hit up Eddy Fierro for pointers, since he's got a set up on his 420A Neon.

Quick search on Neons...

Maybe I'll post them in the FS over there. I would rather help out here, though. I just don't see myself getting another 2gnt for a while, especially not with a $1130 monthly house note.

Actually I've been wanting to do something like this for a while... how much you want for them?

I have seen the ITB setup alot on hondas. Is there really any gains in doing this? Without forced induction you can only get so much air in there right? Looks sweet though.

It's tricky to get a stable vacuum signal on a multi-throttle body setup because of the lack of intake manifold volume. For that reason you will probably need a Megasquirt in Alpha-N mode, which calculates fuel usage using TPS/RPM instead of MAP/RPM. The downside there is Alpha-N doesn't work with forced induction - fueling needs will change whereas TPS/RPM may not.

On a modded NA motor with cams, you'll see the most gain across the entire power band, and quite a bit of torque as well.

On a stock motor, you'll still get noticable gains.

As far as the steady MAP, that's how the busa runs, it's based on MAP, RPM, and throttle position.

http://www.2kmotors.com/luke/auctions/Busa/TB/DSC08463.JP G

See how the 4 are tied together, the allows for the vacuum to be more steady. If it doesn't remain steady, you can put a small vacuum canister in between the sensor and the TB's to allow more volume to steady the readings.

Think of it this way, you're increasing your airflow from about 252 cfm (stock estimate) to about 800 cfm (guestimate, guessing 46mm tb flows 200 cfm) without really hurting your intake air velocity.

On a turbo setup, imagine how much air you could get to flow in there. Turbo busa's are putting down over 200hp to the rear wheel, and it's only a 1.3L.

**EDIT**
With large cams, like the crane 28's, you'll gain like 25 ft lbs of torque and probably over 10 hp throughout most of the RPM range above 4k RPM

Man. That always looks like so much fun. I imagine, on a 2GNT, four equal length runners bending upwards from the head with ITBs sporting highly polished velocity stacks. Maybe a WRX-style hood scoop feeding them fresh air. Wow. That would be hot.

The Neon guys say their ITB set ups are louder than their exhausts!

I started working on a setup a couple years ago but then I smartened up, bought a turbo kit and never looked back. I sold it to someone here but I don't think they ever finished it either.

Just imagine how it'd run with ITB and the turbo.

I really think that, if anyone is ever going to hit that elusive 200whp mark all motor without increasing displacement, it's projects like this, along with really good tuning, that's going to make it happen. There is still no bolt-on solution.

right on
ITB, long tube header, stand alone, race ported head with huge cams, race prepped high compression engine, full exhaust on 3 inch pipe plus all the usual bolt ons

I knew I wanted to add something else. Fortunately, one of those crazy ass Neon guys who actualy fabricates his own stuff lives here and has joined az2gnt. He's currently working on a LTH now that his SMIM is done.

I think it would be killer to fab up a 4-2-1 long tube with merge collectors at each junction that didn't terminate into 1 until under the front seats. That would add a good foot of piping to be split between the primaries and secondaries.

(sigh) Some day. I just gotta get the beater running before I can play with any of the fun stuff.

EDIT:
I can't see the pictures at work, but this might be of interest to anyone considering ITBs.

yupe long tube header is the way to go
too bad no ones make a commercial one for our engines

do you think we could fit 4 pipes in a 2x2 position under the oil pan without scrubbing the ground ?
a true 4:1 :)

a nice long tube, like the ones from howell and fast fab on the neons is a 8+ WHp add-on
best I have seen so far was a 12 WHp dyno gain with the fast fab unit on a neon dohc with a ported head crane #18 60mm tb custom short box intake manifold and 10:5 pistons whn compared to a pacesetter shorty 4:1 which was probably as bad a as a stocker or maybe even worst

if you used it on a turbo you could get a box err surgetank put over the velocity stack (doesn't look as cool) but you could mount the map sensor in the tank. That'd be a pretty awesome setup, would be kinda hard getting all that stuff to fit.

if you just going na you could take the round half of the intake manifold and fabricate an adapter to mount the tbs on. you'd have to find a way to mount the map, unless you could mount it on one runner but I don't know how accurate that is though. looks like a fun but costly project.

I look at my set of TB's everyday and think to myself...some day. heh
