i read this site almost everyday (i need something to do at work)but i never post just getting smarter about my car so on to it i have a 96 rs i have h&r springs kyb agx struts (she is low)aem intake headers 2002 gt rims tower braces gsx front calipers and rear disk conversion in the box just waiting for my rotors and steel lines :) also a center force stage 2 clutch also in the box so this is what i want to do im going turbo ( no more slow eclipse )i dont have the time know-how tools or space to rebuild my block im going with eagle rods je turbo 8:8 1 pistons ill run the block bare no turbo for about 5 to 6 months to break it all in the smart way so after all this here is my question a shop here ( im in hawaii ) vakamon motor sports quoted me 2200-2700 to yank out do all the machine work balanced blueprinted hot tanked, and bored .20 over and i think he said knife edge the crank? that seems high but i have never had a motor built b4 also no parts i have to get them too so all in all its looking like about 4 grand to do it they are a very dsm friendly they have a shop evo they are building now and the guys seem cool am i getting bent over or is this ok i cant find anywhere in the forums what people paid a shop to do there work or if there is anybody in hawaii that can do the work pm me ill pay in cash

on a side note im building a autocross daily driver so im not sure on the turbo yet any help would be great im thinking a small turbo or port my heads when i do the turbo and get a bigger one im going all out with my car i got it in 98 and have done less than 500 in repairs from day one im glad mitsu got it right with my car

yeah definately buy a built block if you are going to spend that much. You will be saving nearly 2 grand. Also that sounds way too much in my opinion from the machine shop in HI. I had all my machine work done, (hot tanked, decked, crank turned, rotating assembly balanced, block line bored, and they even installed my pistons and rods) all for under 400 bucks. So yeah I think you are getting bent over if you pay that much. I know the guy here cut me a deal b/c he knows some of my friends, but he isnt like close w/ them. So maybe 500 if he didnt know me. Which is a great deal in my opinion.

Knife edging the crank is a bad idea since our crank is pretty good on its own. Get a crankscraper instead. The rest is alright, if you absolutely have to have the engine built locally, just get the machining done by a REPUTABLE shop, that is of paramount importance for machining. Don't give your friend your money just because he's your friend.

Buy a set of tools, and then build the engine yourself using corbin's amazing guide. Not only do you end up with a built block, but the sheer know-how you gain from taking it apart and putting it back together again on your own, plus the money you save building it yourself, is completely worth it.

I say buy a built block if you want to go that route. I wouldn't recommend trying to build a block on your own unless you at least have some experience with cars, a garage, and a bunch of tools (all of which he doesn't have). Also, adding some punctuation makes posts a LOT easier to read, and so people will be more likely to respond. Run on sentences are very annoying to read. But good luck with your project anyways.
