97354, Car starting problem and idle issues??? Posted by 97RSEclipse23, Mar-23-06 09:08 AM
i was outside my house and i tried to start my car...and i didnt start at all...i finally got it to start after like the 3rd time bc i gave it some gas before starting and it starts hard still....but the thing that bothers me is my throttle isnt right bc when i put my foot on the gas a little bit it revs for a short peroid of time and slowly comes back to an idle...i think its a censor possibly but maybe someone could help me out????
thanks guys

do you have a check engine light? could be a sensor, but start small and eliminate things at a time. plugs/wires good? have gas in the car? what changed since it was running good?

well it definately depends on which sensor it is. but if you dont have a check engine light it's kind of hard to tell. Maybe you have a bad vaccuum leak or something. So do you have a check engine light on or not? I'd make sure nothing is unplugged from the engine, vac lines, sensors/plugs, wires on the coil pack, check the little things first and work your way up. depending on the year of your car, you can have it scanned and your ecu will say if something is off or not.

I doubt it's a vacuum leak. Those typically result in very high revs compared to idle.
My first suggestion, would be the IAC (Idle air control). It's the first thing I would investigate. In short, it controls the amount of air entering the engine at idle. When you put your foot on the gas, you opened the throttle and bypassed it to help the engine along. It's on the throttle body. Do some searches on here about where and what it is, since I'm leaving work and don't have the time to type it all :)
Good luck, Brian

this true, but it usually gives a check engine light code 25, however it has been bad before and no check engine light... I'm curious if you have a CEL or not though, that'd be very helpful

ok, do the keydance to check and see what cel it is.... to do this turn your key to the on position and then the off position, repeat until the key is on the on position for the 3rd time, now leave it on the on position... your cel(check engine light) will start blinking in single digit intervals. if it blinks 2 times and then pauses and then blinks 5 times, then that is code 25. each code has 2 digits and there will be a pause between each digit. when the codes are finished you will get code 55 (5 blinks, a pause, 5 more blinks)... tell me what codes you get. and if it is more than one code, it will also have a pause like 2 pause 5 pause 4 pause 1 pause 5 pause 5.. that would be codes 25 and 41... try that and we'll work from there..

Check the T/B linkage cable to make sure it isn't sticking. If it's good, then I'd suspect one of the sensors -- throttle or IAC.
