96976, What are the dimentions of our flex pipe? Posted by gramozeka, Mar-11-06 12:36 PM
My flex pipe is really annoying me now. So I have decided to get a new piece and take it to shop to get it welded. If any of you have an old down pipe laying around or have easy access to measure the dimensions could you help me out? I need length and the inner diameter. I will be purchasing it from here http://www.epiflex.com/epi_flex.html

I went out and did a quick measure.....the inside of the flex is about 1.75" and the length is about 7.5"

Thanks for helping me out. I would like to ask you one more question
When you measured the length did you measure the length of the wire mesh only or the wire mesh with the little steel end cups?
The reasons I am asking is that the website where I am ordering form has only 8" long flex pipes
Thx

I believe I just measured the mesh part, but I will go double check when I get a chance

gc8dc95 I don't want to ask too much but if the pipe is easy to access for you please measure the following: inner diameter of the end cups distance between the ends of the endcups diameter of the end cups extensions
refer to the picture on the web site for the location of the things above that I mentioned. If you know anything about welding and can suggest which of the flex pipes to get ... would be great

I am still debating on how to do it. the cost of the flex pipe is about $20. just the job I was quoted is $130. From the muffler place I was quoted for a job + their flexpipe $150. So it is the same if I go to my mechanic with the part or to the muffler shop where they will put their own. 3rd choice is to take down the downpipe and try to weld in in college but I have never done that before and I do not whant to be without a car for a while.

Ya its fairly easy for me I have it just layin around, when I changed it I kept it. Anyway I'll go measure that stuff and get back to you soon. It is fairly easy to weld your own in. This is of course assuming you have experience welding???? Personally I would just unbolt the downpipe from the manifold and take the exhaust off the hangers so it is laying on the ground. If possible unbolt from the cat, but if not there should be enough room to weld the top and sides. Then bolt it back up and finish up the bottom. I used a oxy-acetyl torch to cut mine out.....thats my 2 cents anyway.

Ok heres what I found
1.)from the beginning of one endcup to the other is 8"
2.)Diameter of endcup extensions is a little over 2"
3.)Inner Diameter of endcup extensions is 2"
1,2 are the same as the factory exhaust the diameter is 2"
I would say to go with a 8" long flex with 2" endcup, the one that has the extensions, then when you get it hold it up to your old one and cut out that area. Then weld the new one in place, shouldn't be too tough.
As far as the price from the muffler shop...WOW!!! I paid $130 to have a 2.5" cat-back put on and my muffler welded on. I put on my own header downpipe and testpipe, but still $130 to just change the flex. Maybe I just got my done for a good price, but I think that is kinda spendy.....

why dont you try taking it to a vocational school or something at your local high schools.. I took my motor mount to one about a year ago and they did it all for free for me.. I know a motor mount is probably alot easier to weld than the flexpipe/exhaust but hey worth a shot. Plus you could pick up chick! that was a joke by the way haha
