Ok guys, I got the engine and everything situated. I broke the fuel line, but fixed it, it doesnt leak anymore, so that's not the issue. I cranked her until my battery died. It sounded like it was going to start a couple of times but it didnt. My question is, I did not replace my wires b/c I assumed they were good, I paid alot of money for them about 4 years ago, and they've been strong since. Is there any way to test them? The only thing I could think of was take the plug out one at a time and connect it to the wire and hold the plug close to the block and crank it and check for a spark... I dont know if they are any better ways to check it. Thanks

now that I think about it, I think I gapped my spark plugs at 44, b/c that's what the guy at autozone told me, but 32 keeps popping in my head. I bought the really cheap plugs that autozone has b/c I wanted to test my engine to start before I put my +4's in.. is 44 wrong?

+4's are garbage. you wasted your money.

So you have fuel pressure? Is the pump priming? To you have any spark at all? you should get 12v on the middle wire going to the coilpack. Relays?

Pretty much mechanics grade 10 style. Do you have spark? Do you have fuel?

well is the gap of those cheapo spark plugs suppose to be 44 like the guyt from autozone said or 32 like I'm thinking? Also I need a way to check the spark rather than turning the key while holding the plug/wire close to the block.. b/c I'm by myself and it is impossible, so if anyone knows of another way let me know please.

set the plug wire up against the valve cover and sit in the car and look through the gap in your hood :shrug :P
Or you can buy a tool that plugs onto the starter and cranks the car over for you but just do what I said first.

I mean seriousley, if you have no spark there could be a few things wrong. The relay for the ignition, cam sensor, crank sensor, shit like that. If you 'have spark and no fuel at the rail (check this by checking on the left side, unscrew the little cap on the shreader valve and push it and if gas comes out, the pump is good)

When I was N/a i ran with a gap like .040-.044 or so. Turboed it should be around .032-.035 in there somewhere.

Check your timing.

Lets see...
Just rebuilt the motor...
unhooked every thing in the harness...
redid the timing...
everything else that is involved with a rebuild...


and you think its because the spark plug gap might be a little off?

start from the beginning and check everything. :twitch

well it started the other day, and that is when my motor started shaking b/c of the tranny mount. B/c of that I had to pull my engine and tranny again, and reinstall it all. I'm getting the battery charged as we speak, so I'll start checking for fuel pressure and spark when it's charged. thanks

Do you hear the pump prime when you turn the key over? I would double check the fuse box. It's odd but I know one time the car would'nt crank and it was because a wire was loose under the fuse box to my engine fuse. It was very odd, but something always sets you back.

well guys I really appreciate the help, well after a couple more hours of double and triple checking connections, timing, spark, fuel to the rail, etc... I was out of gas :) my gas gauge said .25 of a tank, but it must be fucked up, b/c I added 5 gallons and she sounds great! woohoo thanks guys

I have done that TWICE!! (not on the Eclipse though)

My buddy and I did a complete motor swap, in fact, just this past Monday/Wednesday. Go to turn it on, sputters and dies. We're like, what the heck? Check everything.

Then my buddy who's cranking the car for us says, "hey guys! We're out of gas!"
