bump... also I have the hastings set of rings.. the only ring that is marked w/ a dot is the 2nd groove ring.. so I'm assuming that the top ring and the 3 oil rings can go either way... am I correct w/ this? thanks...... also to clarify my first question about the position of the gaps am I correct w/ this.. Piston Arrow is at 12:00... #1 ring gap is at 5:00... #2 ring gap is at 10:00... Upper side rail 7:00... Lower side rail 2:00...and spacer expander gap at 10:00 w/ the #2 ring... am I correct w/ this.. please help guys I dont wanna fuck my car up. thanks in advance

Just imagine a triange superimposed onto a circle, that's how you want your rings (or so I believe). Each is 1/3 the way around the piston.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

The key is that all three sets of rings are evenly spaced. Now the oil ring you want to stagger the upper and lower rail. The oil spacer ring doesnt matter.

So if you put ring 1 at 5:00, ring 2 at 7:00, then place ring 3 at 12:00 but take the rails and advance the top and retard the bottom. place the oil top rail at 10:00, spacer at 12:00, and bottom rail at 2:00.

The oil rings are nothing more than "oil squeegee's" for the cylinder.

As far a how the rings are marked, call hastings to make sure. I would agree with you but i have seen rings that arent marked and the manufacturer has the edges cut different to identify how they are installed.
