96501, Distinguishing marks on N/T Muffler vs. GST Muffler
Posted by EclipseSix, Feb-19-06 10:18 AM
I bought the car two years ago and have just recently gotten the money to start modding, so I'm starting slow. (most of my money has actually been going into maintenance lately).

Anyways the exhaust on there now doesn't sound exactly stock, but it most definitely could be, its very hard to tell, especially since I haven't heard many with the GST exhaust.

So I wanted to know is there an easy and bulletproof way of distinguising the GST muffler from the non-turbo muffler? If mine is the N/T then I'll be looking to buy someone's GST muffler, but I don't know which I have yet.

Thanks in advance!

GST - dual tip

N/A - single tip with lip at the end

Judging by your signature picture, I'd say you have an aftermarket muffler.

On the left, is the GST muffler... the right muffler is an aftermarket product from OBX. Picture is from DR1665 and here's a link you can follow.

I'd take a picture of my GST muffler because it's a lot prettier. :P
But it's cold out.

yours is aftermarket...either that or they clamped a generic muffler tip on the NT one. at any rate..its not a GST muffler. gst= DTM

I forgot about that option.

You could just have an exhaust leak, causing it to sound louder.

Yeah its just a generic tip. Cops always ask if I have an aftermarket exhaust when they pull me over and I always say no (I don't -think- i'm lying officer, lol)

As for the exhaust leak, yes that could definitely be the clprit. Eventually I'm going to replace the entire thing with a nice catback, but for now with my limited income I just want a cheap but nice little upgrade for it. GST muffler should do nicely.

Thanks for the pics, helps a ton, points!

our cars are surprisingly loud even with OEM equip. my lil bro's 99rs had a bone stock muffler and you could hear it pretty good. its deff louder than your avg car. but im sure that tip has something in the way of resonance that makes it all sound louder/different

I've read somewhere on a review website for cars how one of the negative comments about the 95-99 non-turbo Eclipses/Talons were that they were unusually loud for a 4'banger.

would after market tips really have a difference in the sound, im sure u guys read my post about replacing the stock GST tips which are to small for the opening IMO. i was doing it cuz it would look better but i woundt want it to be MUCH louder than it is now.

you serious? mine fill up the hole in the bumper perfectly, but I don't know if they are the stock tips, I got the muffler from Michael97RS. I need to work on that sometime, one bolt head is snapped off somehow and that one tip is rattling... pretty annoying.

personally I don't favor the two tip muffler over a single tip, I just think a dual tip looks kinda awkward, but for the price and the performance over a stock rs/gs muffler its definitely a worthy mod.

Remember, dude. All sentences begin with a capital letter and questions end with question marks. :thumbsup

Before: Pacesetter 4-2-1 > 33" Cherry Bomb (glasspack) > stock piping > Magnaflow offset universal muffler (3" I/O) - shifting @~8000rpm.
http://az2gnt.net/DR1665/Daisy/weakVids/inCarAccel.avi

After: Replaced last section with stock GST piece - shifting @~5000rpm.
http://az2gnt.net/DR1665/Daisy/weakVids/GSTexhaust.wmv

Maybe this will give you a better idea.

I really dislike that sound the GST muffler makes when you give it full throttle in the beginning... it's not exactly raspy I wouldn't say, just kinda annoying. My GST muffler sounds the exact same. However, it sounds beautiful coasting in 3rd at like, 4,500-5,000RPM.

Sweet videos! Points.

thats the curse of ANY NA car under 8 cyl. unless you go turbo..youll always have a ceratain degree of rasp at some point in time. you can cure this by installing a longer glasspack in place of the stock resonator..but youll almost never completely rid yourself of that annnoyance till you go turbo.

Agreed. I really enjoy spending time in third gear between 2000-4000rpm in rush hour traffic. This is something I would be cursed and spat upon for doing back when I had the old MagnaFlow installed. (Although, it was really only bad due to being about five years old and all carboned up inside.)

Thanks for the points.

You're probably right. I don't know how long he resonator would need to be, but mine's 33" long in addition to the stocker. I'd guess I'd need to replace the entire center section with resonator, but that would kill any velocity...

Are you running a cat? Being an all-motor beast, I doubt you are.
Are resonators similiar to catalytic converters, in which they dampen sound only? I'm not fammiliar with any of this or what kind of impact they have on the velocity of flowing exhaust.

Correct. No cat here. My Kansas tag, driver's license and student ID keep me out of emissions here in Arizona. :thumbsup

Cats certainly contribute to sound abatement, as the sound waves have to go through the same perforated catalyst as do the exhaust gasses. The reason turbo cars sound even sweeter when you ditch the cat is because the sound waves sort of get chopped up by the turbine blades.

I would suspect the reason you don't want too much resonator is because, as the gasses enter an area with perforation (such as the inside of a glasspack) the gasses are able to expand more than they can while in solid pipe. This contributes to cooling, which results in a reduction in gas velocity.

Damn. That sounded intelligent. Where's deej when I need taken down a peg? :+

Well I have stock piping and a GST muffler. Driggs can attest to the beautiful sounds my car makes. For an N/T I really think it sounds awesome and I get ALOT of compliments on the sound. I picked up mine for $20 and spent an afternoon polishing the tips and painting the body black. I think it looks great!

koji a cat and a resonator are 2 totally different beasts. a cat is a honycomb network of cemamics which is just as it sounds (a catalyist) and burns up most pollutants. the exhaust gasses super heat the ceramics and the reaction burns away most of the chemicals.

a resonator is just a chamber to actually REDUCE resonance. a glaspack is an example of this. it evens out the sounds of the exhaust.

but as driggs said, if you start replacing alot of pipeing with long sections of resonators, your EGV's will suffer due to the loss in heat because of the increase in surface area. this is one additinoal reason why people wrap the hot side of a turbo...and why remote turbo (at the rear of the vehicle) systems are highly ineffecient.

hehe and yes, a turbo is the BEST way to make your exhaust sound better, and muffle the sound a bit :thumbsup. drive next to any big rig, or any other turbocharged vehicle running a straight pipe and youll hear the "turbo chop" and whirr. this greatly reduces resonance and noise.

Damn, I need to quit trolling and start posting more here. Am I the only person who has ever put a 3rd gen gs muffler on the car? It's quiet at idle but sounds great like the gst muffler.

You know, I have always liked the muffler Mitsu had on the 3rd gen cars. I'm not familiar with their cat-back, but will the axle-back simply bolt on to ours?

Get off your trolling ass and get a video clip! :P
I'd definitely give ya points for that.

Axle back bolts right up. The stock hangers even work. The down side is it sits back in the bumper alittle and slightly points to the side.

As far as a vid, I could probably get one this weekend at our srt meet.

Which side? I'm guessing it points to the right if you're looking straight at the rear bumper.

Yes, definitely get a vid while you're out there.

Aside from the people I know who drive 3Gs, I'd say you're one of very few. I, too, would like a video clip of this. Sounds interesting, no pun intended. :thumbsup

I can get some pics later today so you can see the way it offsets. I'll get vid this Sat.

As far as being able to contribute, I think I can. I learned alot from this forum when I was a young pup along time ago. Then like others, I went over to the srt4. I still love my eclipse and have big plans for it.

Wow, you should clean that hoe and spray it with silver ceramic; I'll snag a pic of my GST muffler here in a bit.

I really like it, actually... although I'd probably have a muffler shop weld in an extension that goes underneath the differential (is that right?) so that it comes out a bit further. But that's if I didn't want the awful sound of an annoying fart can... well, one that buzzez. :P

Can't wait for the sound/video clip.

::EDIT::

Yeah, it's been along winter. I put it on when it was like 20 degrees out so I didn't take the time to really clean it. The next couple of weekends she's getting cleaned up and the interior redone.

Oh, my bad, probably should have guessed weather was involved. Should definitely look a lot better after cleaning it up, man.

I got my whole cat-back from a friend who upgraded his TSi's exhaust for $20. I just used the axle-back and chromed the tips up. Put one single layer of engine enamel silver ceramic spray and it has been holding on pretty well. One of these days, I'm going to take it back off and sand blast the body to repaint it.
