Just out of curiousity, does anybody know? I know 1-2 will make your car run like crap. But how many teeth can it skip before the valves actually hit the pistons? Anybody know?

I don't think it's that important to know, Phil. The engine will not run before it gets to that point and timing should always be done correctly, so just kepe in mind that it's obviously not many... :thumbsup

I think its roughly around 3 teeth off, although i've never verified or of course tried it lol. The engine would run VERY badly if that far off anyway, if run at all. Even one tooth off makes for a choppy idle. If you notice adjustable cam gears, you can go 10 cam degrees in either direction, which is roughly two teeth on the cam gear. 5-6 cam degrees is roughly one cam gear tooth. I'm pretty sure people have tried 10 degrees on the adjustable gears, and no issues with it..its gotta be pretty close to hitting at that point though..No gains anyway past 5-6 degrees for adjustables for most setups...it would run bad anyway, just like being 2 teeth off normally.

eh with my shaved head i was 3-4 teeth off total on top. that is 1.5-2 teeth off each gear and yet it hardly idled and would die. Now thats not sayign it one cam is 4 teeth off you wont bend a valve, you may very well do just that but each cam can be as far as 2 teeth off.

Just wondering cuz I threw the alternator belt into the timing belt and the timing belt advanced about 5 teeth. Really regretting another bent valve rebuild. But hoping for a miracle, maybe the cams, cam gear setting, and the fact that it advanced instead of retarded might save my head. Redoing the timing this weekend and seeing if I get compression. For those who say that "ive been running without a timing belt cover for years without a problem" are not to be listend to. If not then rebuild, and if so, well then the answer to my question is about 5 :P

Wow, Phil. That sucks, man. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.
Personally, I have my cover sort of installed. The top part is cut off providing access to the cam gears, and the bottom has a couple holes in it for inspecting timing marks without tearing down so much of the car.
good luck. :thumbsup
