96057, Chiltons blows Posted by DSMxTSi, Jan-29-06 01:51 PM
Ok, so we finally get the n/t back on the ground this weekend after one year of sitting and a recent mishap with installing a new clutch. I unplugged the coil pack and let Jenni crank it over several times to build oil pressure. Plugged the coil harness back in and she fired right up. Then we let her warm up and Jenni took it for a test run around the block to see how it shifted. One note: we don't like the super soft feel of the South Bend DXD clutch. That's just our tastes though, others may like it. Then we washed/polished it and then I took it around the block and noticed the oil pressure light and CEL are now on. So I pull it back in the garage and proceed to check things out. The CEL pulled two 43s. Great :rolleyes , cylinder misfire could be many things but I'm more worried about the oil pressure as it seemed to idle and drive perfectly fine. So I pull out the Chiltons and read about testing the oil presure sending unit. Now, I have a few things to learn about the 420A yet, but the stupid Chiltons showed a drawing of the 1G oil pressure sending unit and stated "others are similar". Ok, so I figured that the sensor located nearest the oil filter housing would be the sending unit. Pulled the harness and used the test light per the Chiltons directions. When I touched the left connector the fuel pump kicked on. Before I could even say WTF I heard a "pfffft" sound from the front drivers corner of the car. My initial impression was that it came from the air filter cause that's what it sounded like when a car has a small backfire. But the engine didn't even try to crank or anything, just the fuel pump kicked on. So I plugged that harness back in and tried to start the car. No dice, just kept cranking. Now I'm pissed as it was apparently fine before. Now I'm thinking that the "pffft" sound may have been the ECU frying. So after some :scratch I check to make sure that I plugged that harness back in, yep. Then try to start it again and she starts just fine. Still have the CEL and oil light but I park it for the time being. So I search the forums and found out the harness I was checking was actually the crank position sensor harness! Now I'm about to throw the Chiltons away. I wish there was a Haynes manual for the 2Gs. Why did the fuel pump kick on? And what could that noise have been?? I realize I must have grounded the crank position sensor. Next weekend I'll check the correct fucking sensors and hopefully get everything squared away. I'm not too worried about the oil light. We'll get a boost, oil, and engine temp gauges before the turbo kit goes on, but we don't have those right now and I want to make sure there is actually oil pressure. Everything seems fine with the way it starts (on the first crank) and how it drives.

give the clutch a chance the pedal will get harder. Also make sure you blead the slave cyl. They make a great clutch

there is a haynes manual for the 2g eclipse i have one, also you might wanna check to see if the oil sending unit is pluged in if it isnt that will throw a light there is just 1 wire, the sender is fairly cheap and easy to replace. just hook up an oil pressure guage and be done with it. as for the poof? i dont know what you did but i wouldnt be under the car grounding wires out, lesson #1 if your gonna touch wires disconnect your battery first or pay the price. just my .02 joe

Where'd you find the 2G Haynes? Online? I can't find them around where we live and was told that they aren't made for 2Gs. I wasn't just "grounding things out". I followed the Chiltons directions to test the harness with the test light and the ignition on. You kinda need the battery hooked up to test electrical connections. Later I found that I was testing the wrong harness, hence me getting pissed at the vagueness of the Chiltons manual.

if the oil sender is unplugged you will not get a light. also i too have a haynes and chilton for 2gs. check your fuse box. i bet you blew a fuse.

The oil pressure sending unit is really of no use to anyone. It comes on when you've got like a litre of oil left in the pan and by then.......lol. It's pretty much toasted rod bearing time :P
I would be safe and get and oil press gauge and hook that up before you start the car up again. After removing the sensor and using that spot for the oil press gauge and turbo feed line i've never gotten a light. The ecu doesn't look at that sensor at all like it would test the EGR and you'd throw a code so I don't know why the light is on??
How's the oil level ?? :)

I just changed the oil before we got her back on the ground. I'd like to order gauges right now but Jenni wants to save money to get the Spyder's rear fixed and a new body kit. I'll bet that I unplugged that oil sending unit harness when dropping the tranny, then forgot to plug it back in. I won't be able to get to it till next weekend, though. I'll do some more hard searching for the 2G Haynes. I've always preferred our Haynes for our 1G as the Chiltons is simply too damn vague.

Thanks, I'm gonna get one soon.
Just curious, has anyone ever had a problem with a sensor failing after their car has sat for a long period of time?

Just checked things out and found the oil sending unit broken. It was plugged in so that's why the oil light was on. I also checked the coil pack and the primary resistance is bad. So that's probably throwing the CEL. I'm glad that's all that's wrong with it. Gives us good reasons to get gauges now and the MSD coil pack. :)

The 43's were probably from cranking it without the coil plugged in.

It was plugged in every time. Still has the CEL. If the primary resistance is bad on the coil pack, would the car even run well? The right-up on the main 2gnt site said it should fall between .51-.61 ohms. I got 0.00 for both. The secondary fell into specs. The idle is smooth and runs nearly perfect. It had a small hesitation under light throttle but that has smoothed out some too, probably due to the ECU relearning. I still get no acceleration, blinky a/f gauge goes full lean, at full throttle under 4K rpms. That's been going on for a long time now. The gas in the tank is over a year old. That'll have something to do with the hesitating but would it throw a #43 CEL?

It was? Just nitpicking. if it doesn't go away in a few days, replace the coil.

LOL, that was just at first since the car hadn't ran for over a year. I didn't want to just start it on "dry" cylinders. After searching through the forums I decided to order the coil pack and will block off the EGR system. I'll probably change plugs too, though I doubt they're a problem.

Just plugged the obd2 software up to it and pulled these for the CEL:
P0340 No Cam signal at PCM P0352 Coil #2 Primary circuit P0351 Coil #1 Primary circuit
With all that wrong I think it wouldn't run well at all. :shrug

its definately because you unpluged your coil and cranked it. I did the same thing when i tried to compression test my neon and I couldn't find the spark relay or the ASD relay. Threw a code when I started it up and ran the datalogger and it said cylinder misfire blah blah.
So I just cleared it with the logger and hasn't come back since.
just wondering does anyone know where the ASD relay is on a 99 neon?

Yeah, I'm believing that now. After we drove it a couple days the CEL went away. But it is better with the new coil pack now. I also remember that a couple years ago the CEL flickered while driving, only did it that one time though.
Chilton's did it again! I was testing the MAS on our Spyder and couldn't get proper readings, so I figured the MAS was bad. Then later I went back out to check it over again and found the info in the Chilton's didn't match up with the plug on the MAS. Chilton's said to test leads #6 and #8, but the MAS connection only has 7 leads. Needless to say I'm glad I ordered the Haynes last week, just can't wait for it to get here. I had to call Haynes directly because O'Reillys again told me that the Haynes for the 2Gs is only an auto body repair manual.

Wtf? Haynes 2gnt 95 to 99 manuel only for bodywork. That store rep. is f'n with you. Advance/autone has them for 15 bucks. Ordering would be more?
Advance auto near my house and next to my work always f' with me about certain parts for 2gnt's. One example is about underdrive pulleys they they don't make it, or have it. Which I know is b-s
I love the dumb found look on their faces when I prove them wrong.
Well, I even applied there many times, no luck. From wantit seems like this advance only hires two types of peps, young women and pep from in town. Which is b-s, Live ten minutes aways.
Doesn't stop me from shopping there?
