95892, 2 problems need help asap
Posted by ameclipse, Jan-20-06 06:05 AM
Ok the first problem is that my 97 gs smokes at idle not alot but it is noticable i think i might be burning oil but it doesnt smell like it and i know im not burning coolant. Im leaning towards oil. but i am running a little rich from the new walboro pump but i do have the vortech fmu. but ti also did smoke a little bit before this not as noticable as it is now. My other problem is when i first start up my car from it sitting over night it sounds like there is something in the transmission jumping around, but as soon as i put it into gear it goes away. could transmission be going. Please anyone help me .

The smoking could be valve seals.

What transmission? Does your speedometer work?

manual trans and yes the speedo works. How hard is it to replace the valve seals. I have all the tools to do it with and i am mechanically inclined .

What color is the smoke?

Blue-oil
White-coolant
Black-too much fuel
Purple-You're a ricer

It could be an O2 sensor going bad, or your FMU putting too much fuel in. (Both assuming it's fuel)

Does it smoke just as it's warming up, or all the time? What happens when you push the throttle? Does it go away, or is there a big puff?

well i just replaced the o2 not to long ago i think it is blue but also last week i went to wash it and there was black soot on my rear bumper just above the muffler it hasnt been back since. Im thinking it oil because kind of looks like when its cold out and you can see your breath. I am a mechanic but i think im just in denial. LOL
It smokes at idle and when i slam on the gas it makes a big puff then goes away. or if i hit the gas to redline and the liminator kicks in there is smoke when it bounces back and forth. but no smoke when driving but then after driving and sitting at light it starts to smoke again.

This was the second time in a week that I had nasty noises coming from my tranny. This time around, it was still shifting very nicely, but the noise was not good. Big ass picture of ouput shaft bearing. Navigate up the directory for more pictures if you want.

Throw out bearing, maybe?

There ya go. Those are valve seals.

Should be able to just pop the valve cover off and remove the springs and retainers and the valve seals are right there. (at least this is how it is on my buddy's Dodge head). A good idea--use an air compressor in the spark plug hole or another buddy to keep the valve from dropping. You should be able to do this without taking the head off since the seals are right on the top.

You can pull the old seals out with a pair of pliers and just pound the new ones in with a socket and hammer. Get some more opinions before you start tearing the car apart.

you could always just put the cycinder that your working on at TDC and then the vavles shouldnt drop down very far lol.

The Trans Im not sure the one in my avenger made noises like that all the time all I can say is drive it and hope nothing really goes wrong I guess only prob. I ever had with mine was well other then clutchs there was a pin in my final drive that broke. shoot right through the case though and I had a nice leak lol.

I have the same sound coming from my tranny, it goes away when I depress the clutch. A very respectable mechanic friend of mine said that he also thinks that its the throw out bearing. But, my clutch and TO bearing are brand new, so I don't know, maybe I put it in wrong.

If the sound goes away when you depress the clutch, it's more than likely the TOB. This can and does happen with new TOBs when they are not clipped into place on the clutch fork properly. I think it's more an annoyance than a threat, though. Mine has done this for a long time. I'm more annoyed by the near constant slap of my pistons. :P
