I have a 98 RS with a 420a. I bought an auto meter water temp. gauge but I'm not sure were the best place to put the probe is. I was gonna drill where the upper hose connects to the block but I'm afraid I'll damage the thermostat. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks

What I did: I took out the hard line that goes from the T-stat housing (where the hose connects to the head) to the heater core, replaced it with SS braided hose and inserted my probe there.


What many do: Drill and tap the T-stat housing on the left side (as you're looking at the motor). There's a flat space there that you can do it.

So did you thread the hardline pipe to accept the an fittings for the ss hose? What size AN fitting did you use.

The easiest way to install an Autometer coolant temperature probe is to T off the thermostat housing. This way there are no drilling or other irreversible modifications required.

I've got a T on mine, for my MS temp sensor. I will be removing the stock ECU completely in the near future, so not drilling (or otherwise irreversable) was a big reason for this. I'm sure it doesn't get as good of flow as it used to, but it seems to work just fine. In about another week and a half, I will be removing my stock ECU + wiring + sensors, so I needed something that could easily be removed.

well to answer your question the BEST place to put it is in/on the thermostat housing. The probe part has to be in the path of the coolant also to be accurate.

I hope you have a way to regulate the alternator and idle control valve if you are removing your stock ECU entirely.
