I have a 97 GS Spyder with the 2.4 L engine and automatic transmission. The transmission made a pop noise now it wont move at all. I drained the trans fluid and it looked kinda grey. How many quarts should I put back into it? I am thinking the transmission is done. Any input would be greatly appreciated, concerning diagnosing this transmission, and where to buy a used transmission. What model number is this trans? What other vehicles use this same trans? Your engine is the 2.4L Mitsubishi 4g64, transmission code f5a31. The f5a33 from a 4g63 (GST hardtop or spyder) would also probably work.

In addition to what Dan posted, you will put in 4-6 quarts of trans fluid. put in 4q then start the car up, let it idle and check the trans dipstick. if you check the dipstick with the car off then you will not get an accurate measurement of how low you are.

How hard is it to replace the transmission on this 97 Spyder, 2.4 L, automatic transmission? Do I need to pull the engine completely out or can it stay in the car? Make sure you didn't just break an axle first. Open diff, it'll just spin the trans and never move.

otherwise, try your local junkyards. I imagine swapping a Spyder trans is no harder than swapping any other transverse FWD transaxle... i've never done it.
