my dads talon spun a bearing and the crank i bought from someone on this board was in bad shape when i recieved it.. the machine shop said it needs at least to be ground down by .13 or something like that. but they also said they think a .10 is the only oversized bearing they make for the 420a , is this true and if not where can i get the bigger bearings? rod and main i need

Clevite makes a .020 oversized bearing. Check Howell.

I know I got my Clevite rod bearings at Napa... probably faster service going that route (from what I've heard about Howell).

is there any site online i can order them and get them pretty fast? i cant seem to find the oversized online.

my dads block is a 95. why does it say for 95 block order 2 sets and use only the upper halves? that would mean spending 100 basically and only using half ???

STD, .25mm(.010 inches) and .50mm (.020 inches).

These will prevent oil starvation to the rods which is a known problem with 420A's. We have been modifying them in all the engines we build, and that was one of the reason that our engines were out lasting and out power our competitors.

Another new product for the oil system is the Melling High Volume oil pump. http://www.howellautomotive.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1268 This is a must for the turbo guys. You are sucking off oil for the turbo, and the factory oil system was never designed for it. He is a pump that adds extra volume to the system to supply the turbo, and additional oil to the bearings.

We have been working hard to bring new products to market for the oil system on the 420A.

Many companies carry Topline bearings for 95 and 96-99 in Std, .010, and .020. $80 for the main bearing set.

That is more Expensive than the Clevite 77, and not as good a bearing by any means.

95's use differently notched bearings than 96-99.

thats dumb.. they should sell a set of the right ones..

Topline does sell a set with the right bearings for a 95. For $80.

Clevite as far as I know, still does not. But hey, they're "a much better bearing" so it's worth buying two sets I guess.

I have seen a little sarcism in this thread about the cost of buying two sets of bearings. Don't pay any attention to those people, they are people trying to do stuff cheap instead of better, and they end up paying more in the long run. And you don't have to buy two sets anymore.

Every engine we build we use to upper half bearings, even in the 96-02 blocks were we have to modify the blocks to make it work.

Here is why, the 420A has an oil timing problem. This is not really a concern on a car that people just cruise around in, but when you start pushing the engine to its limits. Number 2 rod is the worse, but 3 can also be an issue. The oil has to pass through the crank to get to the rod on the 420A, and while under pressure number 2 & 3 are in a position that has them cut off from pressurized oil for a split second at this critical time. During this time the bearing must rely on oil that stuck to the bearing, and that is fine for going to the store to get bread. At 8,000 RPM's coming off a corner at Summit Point Raceway, or going through the traps at Rockingham at 20 psi of boost it is not good enough. Over time this damages bearings until the eventually fail.

This problem was first noticed in Canadian race series that used the 420A in a north-south configuration. I worked with the series back in the late 90's to solve the problem. The solution was to have full groove main bearings, this keeps a constant supply of pressurized oil to the rod bearings. This is accomplished by allowing the oil to flow in the grove around the crank, so at no point is the passage to the rod bearing blocked from oil.

Also we worked with Clevite to bring out a new set of full groove bearings. http://www.howellautomotive.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1267 So you don't have to buy two sets anymore to do the swap. You can also see they are much cheaper than the topline, which is not as good a bearing, and doens't offer the benefits of full groove.

basically all i need is the part or item number for bearings that are the .020 or an item number to order them . i need rod and main.. car just needs to be fixed to be sold. not to race or anything.

You can select the bearing size when you order them off the website. It is a drop down menu. They usually ship within 24 hours, and depending on your location you should see them with in a day to a week if your on the west coast.
