95101, CA Smog failed.. my results Posted by InFiNiT3, Dec-12-05 11:52 AM
ok fellas wasnt by much and i think i know what i plan on doing to fix it... but i wanna hear what everyone has to say b4 i drop another 50$ to test it.
RESULTS: HC NOX CO max measured max measured max measured 15mph 54 45 430 425 .50 .15 25mph 37 40* 717 257 .47 .23
as u can see hc is high along w/ low spd nox readings... i need to get these down as low as possible cause another fail will result in me having to smog every single yr :( and i cant keep swapping parts from aftermarket to stock... help a brotha out :)

was the cat hot when you tested, a lot of shops will put a cold car up on the rack and test it and it will fail like it never had a cat to begin with. I always try to go when theirs nobody at the smog station and drive the car for about 45 mins before the smog so I know it's hot. Don't let the car sit for a long time and insist that the car be warmed up. Other than that, I say run 87 octane in it, others will say run 91 (for those non-californians, 91 is the best we got :( ) I like the idea that 87 will combust easier than 91 and since you aren't hitting high rpm for a smog anyways, might as well use it. Good luck man, mine passed but still averaged high.

Do you have your plugs gapped correctly? EGR removed? If not, is it clean/working properly? Mileage on the cat? Theres some kinda gas additive at Advance Auto that guarantees you pass, you might wanna check it out. I'm not sure if its a wonder fluid or not, but it might be worth it. Also, I'm unsure what the octane of the gas will do for emissions, you might wanna check that out on your own.

It's called G2P (Guaranteed to Pass), try that along with a fully warmed up cat.

ya im gunna try that today considering im only off by 3 pnts..cat was fully warmed (25mins hwy driving) imma try backing the timming down 2* , filling with premium fuel and adding the smog additive. If i have to ill shove a marble in the evap line as well.
as for the plugs... ya theyre new and gapped , new wires , ign. ect... i just got done rebuilding the engine.... (has about 7k miles on it) New CAT as well... just replaced the o2 (front). Im gunna pull the plug tho just to make sure the valve cover seals are holding...u guys know how they like to leak..
any more suggestions? keep em comming.. i cant fail! lol

sup man!
high NOx has to do with heat directly. some things it could be from your numbers...
way lean afr (not likely) EGR functionality catalyst (rhodium in a reduction cat reduces nox)
call me up, we'll chat

Premium gas will make your HC's even higher. HC is unburnt fuel or oil.
Use 87 octane, Guaranteed2Pass, and possibly a new cat. If you have ANY mods to your fuel or ignition, go back to stock.
Search for the appropriate factory plugs to use, either NGK or Champion. No platinum or "high performance" shit.

HC is unburnt fuel yea....but not oil, persay. HC's from the crankcase gas and blow by will contaminate the oil, and this could cause a smog failure because it changes the AFR when its digested by the PCV. this is why they say change your oil and filter before you do a smog check.
id do a functional test of the EGR first, and first and foremost make sure you dont have an exhaust leak pre 02 sensor or cat...this will throw it all off.

FUCKING COCK SUCKING BULLSHIT!
failed again...this time its worse in the hc area much lower co and nox and higher o2?
-regaped plugs -retarted timming -1.5* exhast cam -ran g2p -87 octain -threw my other cat on -new 02 (1) -added some HEET (methane) to increase o2 -no exhast leaks -drove car on HW for about 3 hrs (over 100 miles)

Read above. Go back to stock. Don't retard your timing, set it at 0.
Turby, if you are burning oil, you'll see raised HC's. But you're right, its normally always unburned fuel.

95126, RE: CA Smog failed.. my results Posted by turbo8u, Dec-13-05 02:07 PM
hey whats up jake, sucks you failed again bro....blah
i can bet you the reason your HC's went up is because when you retarded the exhaust cam all you pretty much did is delayed the closing of the exhaust valve and increased overlap. i bet unburnt fuel from the intake valve is just straight up flying out the exhaust at idle, its not getting complete combustion...because there's unburnt fuel (HC's)
and swapping the cat and using the smog shit is probably what fixed the NOx readings.
carbon monoxide readings are a good indication that you're rich, and since they seem to be OK then i dont think being to rich could be your problem.
like dan said, run stock timing....stock plugs....i think you'll be ok
...this is assuming you have the stock cams in...
if anything i think ADVANCING the exhaust cam would be more beneficial to lowering HC and CO than retarding it would...

mostly visual shit.... A/F gauge - illeagle adjustable cam gears -illeagle saudered connections at map sensor-illeagle
misc repairs- replace silicone hoses at pcv / vent with carb appoved replace cat converter re-install / route all vacume lines to spec using OE diagram install stock stall tourqe converter (KISS MY ASS) replace MSD coil with OE spec
and a bunch of lil shit like pcv , egr solenoid , tape up harness ect...
guess ill have an extention for a while then lol.
BTW none of u guys have a stock cat laying around do ya lol?

replace cat converter
You mean he told you to put "everything back to stock, especially ignition", "don't retard your timing", and "try a new cat"? Madness. Who woulda seen that coming?

I'm wondering how did he find out about all of the things that typically should not be visible... unless you told him is what I am thinking.
Eitherway goodluck passing smog. It can be a real pain in the rear.

Well, not sure about the other shit, but I know for a fact that the MSD coil is smog legal, I still have my sticker under the hood.
And since when is monitoring equipment (A/F Guage) illegal?

for some reason, burning oil doesnt raise the HC's very much at all. My teacher was telling me today he just passed his smog test and he burns a quart a week. Ive also been using some exhaust gas analyzers in the shop and its true that burning oil wont necessarily cause you to fail a smog.
but i mean, if you have blacked up oil thats old with blowby HC's and shit and thats being burned, then yea...i could see the HC's going up...but this isnt from the oil in and of itself, its the unburned hc's in the contaminated oil.
just food for thought
jake.....that sucks man. are still still a tech? sometimes you can get in mad trouble for "tampering with an emission control device" even if youre just soldering it. stupid i know, but sometimes the fines for techs are like 2500 bucks. be careful, what happened to your homie with the smog license?
i really should just go for the smog program huh?

awww dude.... 1st he had it suspended for doing an illeagle smog.... then while they were investigating him they noticed it was his twin brothers lisense lol busted!!!!!!!!!!!!
and the only reason the A/F gauge is illeagle is because it taps into an emmision control device/harrness
thats all
i got my extention so im not even gunna worry about it this month :)

I've tried pretty much tried everything and I can't get my car to pass smog it went from nearly failing to GROSS POLLUTER after like 3000 miles of driving but I have a built engine that burns a quart of oil every like 100 miles.
I've done everything to try to get the numbers down. My car is nearly stock now also.
that was a bad idea taking your car to ref. Any kind of modification they'll write you up. I took mine there one time and man everything they're like you got carb numbers for this and bla bla bla. I can't believe he got you for AF gauge and MSD igntion, that's total bullshit. Does MSD have a carb number for our ignition?
best thing to do is try to get it as close to stock specs as possible then if you can't pass take it to a shop to have them get it to pass for you. If you need money BAR has a program called CAP (consumer assistance program) and if you have a test only car or you car fails smog they'll help you pay 500 dollars worth of smog repairs. Takes a long time to do though I got mine approved but I need to get my engine rebuilt in 90 days and break it in.
I can't remember since its been a while since I've done a smog check but: high HC = rich unburnt fuel high NoX= lean or EGR you can check how good your mixture and cat efficiency is by looking at the CO2 and O2 levels also but I forget what the good numbers are.

Failing smog inspections is the curse of our time (and clifornian govnt and greenpiece etc...) I feel your pain. Best of luck. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 98 Stock Talon ESi Mods: New spark Plugs, and UDP I know spark plugs are not a mod but the car runs so smooth now.
