95085, lifters the same as DOHC Neon? Posted by 98VengeI4, Dec-12-05 03:55 AM
Just found some variable duration lifters. I was wondering if we use the same lifters as the dohc neon? If you search neons.org messsage board for Rhoads Lifters you will find the topic. I am at work now, and neons.org forums are blocked. Here is there website, not sure if they list the neon on the site, I think they still are pretty new. http://www.rhoadslifters.com/
Here is a write up on how they work.

Also, on neons.org they say the vaccum at idle is increased, and the car has a "stock" idle with high lift and duration cams.
My question is are the lifters the same?
Thanks!

And the article is a good read as well.

It's an old concept, they're basically 'anti-pump up' lifters. I had something similar in my cougar years ago. At an idle, or lower RPMs, they're not fully pumped up because the can bleed off a little pressure, so they take a little lift & duration out of the cam. As oil pressure rises, the lifters pump up and don't have time to bleed, providing the full lift & duration of the cam.
When I used them, my cam wasn't that big, so at an idle, I'd get quite a bit of lifter tap.
I imagine that if combined with a large cam (crower 3 or crane 16+) it could be benefitial, but with a smaller cam, you may get some good lifter chatter.
**EDIT** Oh, and it looks like they're sending in their lifters to be 'modified' by rhoads, not purchasing new lifters from them.
You planning on sending yours in?

Yeah, I read the whole thread and article. It was pretty informative. I want to try them when I do my rebuild with 12.5:1 and crane 18s. ;)

Did you notice that Chuck said:
Now that my engine is well tuned for the street, the low speed, low rpm behavior is almost as good as stock with 354/354 .420/.420 cams.
Umm, 354 duration eh? Wrong, the biggest cam advertised from Crower as "Full Race" for the 2.4l is 254.

Was that on the neons.org thread? Right now I am at work, so I can't go there. I am leaving now though, so after I get home, I will check it out.

the ones on that stupid ass chrysler are better. the pt cruiser ones have bigger holes in them for better oiling.

I almost called upon Captain Obvious, but this statement makes no sense to me. The PTC, the 2GNT, and the Neon are ALL MADE BY CHRYSLER. What the hell is wrong with you? On top of being a clusterfuck of poor grammar and a total disregard of capitalization conventions within the English language, that comment contributes nothing to this subject. In the future, just say "I like cheese."

Since that post in question earlier, the guy corrected himself to say the 354 was a typo of the correct 254. They sound like an interesting idea. I have zero tap on the PTCs with Crower 2s, but I might see about having my PTCs modified this spring for the new project. ;)
