It looks like a cost effective alternative to the Hydraulic tensioner. Anyone have experience with this? I tried searching but could not find any info about this part on this website. Thanks.

I think we have a guy in az2gnt rolling that set up. We're waiting on more input from him.

hmm, i know some neons run those stock, and iv seen over at neons.org people swapping over. never heart of one on a 2gnt :shrug

i guess someone could try it and let us know how it works out.

I actually emailed the guy at PD and he said he has sold quite a few but hasn't heard any feedback from anyone....I guess no feedback can be good feedback.

The mechanical converison is about the same price as the tensioner from Chrysler/Mitsu but the converison kit comes with the belt and idler pulley if I'm not mistaken so it looks like a more cost effective alternative. I was going to order it along with some other engine stuff in the next few week when I get my block/head back from the machine shop. I'll try to leave feedback when I get a chance.

this is a 2g neon late model tensionner
they are using since 2002 or 2003 on the sohc engine, either normal 132 hp or magnum 150 hp
similar to srt-4 tensionner but shaped to fit the 2.0 engine

If you want my old Hydraulic tensioner you can have it. I bought the mechanical tensioner and have no need of the old hydraulic unit. It still has a lot of tension. Just send me a PM if you want it.

I just figured if Im going in, Ill replace everything and thought the mechanical tensioner was an upgrade...

because the belt it walking and making noise...
also the idle will get really crappy after idling for about a minute
but that may be the ISC Motor again...
Was your belt REALLY hard to slip over the tensioner when it was fully unspring?? My bf and I had hell putting it on...I had to put my ass into it severely.
it really sounds like bearing noise...

I hope I don't have those problems...YES, it was like impossible to get enough slack to slide the belt on, had to be sneaky sneaky :-o

you might have the same problem I had...
when you manually turn the crank, does the belt walk off the cams just a little bit??
it looks like the belt is not in the position is should be, it should sit further back
mine looked the same way...it was really off of the Intake Cam.
what I will do this time is get 2 metric 10 bolts in a 1.50 pitch that are short and put them in the other holes for the tensioner so that everything is in its theoretical final position, tension it then turn the crank over and see if the belt walks. this way you can see whats happening before you put everything back on and possibly end up in the same predicament Im in...

that sux 6 months :eek 3 days and I thought I was gonna die!!!
The longest time Ive been down was when doing the Atx->Mtx...2 months coz I had to wait for parts and had no idea what in hell I was doing :shrug

Im pretty sure youve done timing before, so Im making a moot point, but make sure everything is TDC and turn the crank manually 2 revolutions and then turn it over with the starter, even if it runs on battery for a bit. If it makes belt/bearing noise get the hydraulic tensioner...
My rough idle was caused by the belt being too tight, it caused it to somehow jump time by getting the cams out of sync and the belt wasnt tracking right/ walking because it was so damn tight
Just be careful, pistons and valves should never make each others acquaintance

Everyone I know told me that I was fuckin up, but I bought it anyways. Now I gotta admit....I fucked up....and thats now an easy thing to do...
So, I went to Napa today for hydraulic parts :-) and my car is running now
gotta do the p/s and 1 motor mount tomorrow morning before work
