94797, mopar stage 2 cams? Posted by sp0nge3209, Nov-26-05 10:14 PM
I recently bought these off e-bay, and as usual I didnt check first, so has anyone had any experiance with these cams, they both have the numbers 320 and 532 stamped on opposing sides on the end farthest from the cam gears. I searched and only found one reference and it said they would need to be indexed, how dificult is indexing a cam, i have the concept down, just not the step by step, or am I getting concerned for nothing? I could use any advice, I am going ahead with the install soon, barring any bad news from her. Thanks for the time, i am a fairly proficient mechanic, and have almost all the "bolt on" mods one can get, no head work as of yet tho. also will the cam gears need to be set closer to stock to keep from hitting the valves on the pistons, or should I still be able to set them as far as plus or minus 6 degrees or so? I would like to thank all of the members who post and answer questions on these boards, this site has been invaluable to me, and have sent several fellow 2gnt owners here, thanks fro paving the way so to speak.

All the mopar cams i have seen listed other performance sites are intended for the Neon which as you know will not work on your motor.

o.k., The guy I bought them from e-mailed me back, he said he did have them in an eclipse, he said the idle was lopey, but that they really came alive after 4k rpms. he did say the timing was a little difficult to set. I dont know how the timing would be any harder to set, I guess he used adj. gears. Or is it even possible to get them to work at all in an eclipse, and he is just blowin smoke? I installed my adj. gears a few months ago so it should be no prob. on the install, I just hate wasting my time. Sorry if I am beating a dead horse. Thanks for the fast reply Star.

Call any dealer, verify the cams are for a Neon. If they are designed for a neon, no right minded individual can make them work in an eclipse. Take a look at a neon motor......the intake and exhaust are reversed. Neon cams and eclipse cams are not interchangeable in any way what so ever.

are the motors in a neon just sitting backwards or are the intake and exhaust cams just reversed? how can I tell which one of the two cams I have is intake and which is exhaust? One of them has a magnetic looking trigger pickup thingy bolted to the end opposite of where the gear goes. other than that they look identical as far as I can tell.

The entire head is reverse flow designed. Cams are different. Exhaust on both heads has the Cam trigger.

I will probably try to hit up my local dealer,,,,car dealer,,,,and see if they know what kind of cams they are first thing. I know they say that the neon cams wont work, but just out of curiosity can anyone explain to me why, thanks for all of your patience. I am far from a beginer but even farther from a what ever the farthest end of the knowledge spectrum is called. Thanks again.

Dood. Don't even waste your time trying to find out about the cams.
They will not work no matter what you do. Listen to /\/\/\

You can't interchange them. You would have an exhaust cam managing intake and vice versa. The seller scammed you. He's full of shit. Find someone on Neons.org to buy them from you.

the neon has the cam sensor on the intake cam and not the exhaust mopar never make performance dohc cams for neons so those can't be neons unless they are regrind and even there they could be 420a regrinds the only way to tell for sure is by the casting number

Anyway, in order for the cams to work, you'd have to have them indexed by a machine shop (because I'm guessing you don't have all the required tools to do so), which they'd almost have to guess because the cam you'd be installing to control your intake valves was actually designed to control the exhaust valves on a neon, same goes for the exhaust side of your motor, they'd be controlled by the neon intake cam.
The motors are almost identical, with the exception of the casting of the head. The head sits the same way, but the lower portion is basically rotated 180* (the intake ports & exhaust ports are on oposite sides, and the combustion chamber & valve seats are mirror to match the flow ports). The cam magnet pick-up is in the same place as on our motor, but instead of being triggered by the position of the exhaust cam, it's triggered by the position of the intake cam.
This poses another issue, if you were to use the intake cam for your exhaust, will the cam magnet from the neon intake cam line up EXACTLY the same as the eclipse exhaust cam?
It will be a major PITA to do it, so don't bother, just buy some designed for the 420a in an eclipse. The neon is known as rear exhaust, the eclipse is front exhaust, keep that in mind for future reference.
**EDIT** Oh, and that link can be confusing when talking about the rods:
Notice how it says the 2.0l rod is on the left, it's obviously longer, but it clearly states that the 2.0l rod is 5.47" center-to-center, while the 2.4l is 5.94".
