OK here it goes, Block has some miles since rebuild. Fired her up noticed she drops oil after a drive 5 miles down the road. Abot two quarter sized drops.

Park her for a while. Look under, noticed that the tranny might be the one leaking... or both.

One leak, im sure its the sensor above the oil filter, there is oil from there to the filter. So I will look at that, any o-rings? or jsut teflon?

Another is the one that has me scratching my head. I thought it was a minor tranny leak so I dediced to go buy the Chrysler diff housing axle seals, M04797334. Is that the chrysler or mitsu number? Anyone have the chrysler number?

Heres the big one, I pulled engine and tranny to make sure EVERYTHING is leak free. I WAS going to seal the tranny up again, but doubt its the Anarobic sealant now. When I went to seperate tranny and engine about a cup of oil gushed out as soon as I removed the access plate for the flexplate bolts. It was all in the bellhousing.

Heres the question, How do I know its tranny fluid or engine oil? They are both so similar being brand new and synthetic. I will buy a rear mail seal M04667904 ( again mitsu or chrysler?) any one have the chrysler part number?

Does the trany input shaft have a replaceable seal? been searching and still am but im getting no where. Any one have a part number for that?

I really would like the numbers since my chrysler part guy is a total idiot at times or just lazy.

The oil filter adaptor should have an O ring where it meets the block. Just unscrew the oil filter tube nut and take off the adaptor to see if its on there. Also, there is an o ring that goes between the bedplate and the block above the oil filter adapter area, but you would have to sparate and tear down the engine to look at that.

As for the leak at the trans, you can usually tell if its trans fluid just by smelling it. I'm assuming you are manual trans, but the fluid stinks like an oil refinery..you said you used synthetic in the trans though? If so, then you may not be able to tell easily. You may only be able to tell by looking how dirty it is. If its really clean, and your oil hasnt been changed recently, you may be able to tell(clean oil would be trans of course in this case). Check your trans oil level..if its leaking that much, it will be low. On the engine, check the oil galley seal plug BEHIND the metal starter shield. These have been known to leak. You WILL be able to tell if oil is leaking there. That leaves the rear main oil seal, which i think you could tell as well if it were leaking there. The input shaft of the trans has a seal, but also is the bearing in all one unit. You have to take the bellhousing off the trans in order to replace it. Its a pressed in bearing/seal assembly. When i did mine, I got a new bearing/seal, and took the bellhousing to a trans repair shop, and they took out the old one, and pressed in the new one for 20 bucks...not bad to save some headach. Other than that, those are the only 3 places you can really get that much oil from. Check to be sure the bedplate seal isnt leaking as well.

I was almost sure it was the rear main, then I look at it after taking of the flexplate and it doesnt seem that bad, I look at the bell housing...man. 2 problems with it being the tranny though, It still had a good ammount of fluid, the evidence could be misleading since It has not been driven in 4 weeks. The clutch lookd ok, but it wouldnot hold under boost ( stock for the break in...stupid i know). so I dont know...

The oil filter housing will come off to take a look and to add a sanwich adapter for an oil cooler. Pans comming of for a windage tray. I will take off the flexplate shield to see behind there at the galley you speak of.

looking at the tranny theres no other leaks around it other then the bottom so im guessing either one of the axle seals is bad ( hence the oil andgrime on the sides leading to the bottom, or the bottom just didnt seal well enough?

either way a new rear main is going to be bought at chrysler, and new axle seals. I dont know about the tranny input... any thoughts?

do any of you know the part numbers for any of theese for chrysler/dodge?

Edit: Measured the tranny fluid, 1qt and 1/3 came out. Is this right for being driven 30 miles?

host the pics here on 2gnt bro so i can see them. i had an oil leak in the same spot your describing i think, it would look like it was coming down from the crank sensor and dripping off the oil filter so i replaced the oring on the sensor and it didnt work, and then extreme97 said he had the same thing it was his cam seals, and sure enough, thats what it was for me, it was leaking and dripping all the way down there.

Use some 400 grit sandpaper to clean the rust off of your halfshafts before installing them into your tranny with the new seals. you should use a light coat of lube of some sort on the shaft seals. As for your leaks if it is the input shaft on the tranny I'd say just replace the seal/bearing assembly so you don't have problems in the future (preventative maintenance). And just cross reference all your part numbers with a dodge dealer ask them for Avenger Parts.

M/T holds by spec, 2.1 quarts of oil..

By looking at the pics, and you saying you only have 1.3 quarts of trans oil, i'd say it is coming from the trans. The input shaft doesnt look to be leaking, but its possible. You can tell the oilis getting on the clutch, because you can see how the oil is spattered on the inside of the bellhousing. A rear main seal, or even that oil galley plug would prob not get onto the clutch, but more likely just drip down in front of the flexplate, opposite side of the clutch. I would really take a very close look at the bellhousing too, to check for any cracks in it, on the inside where the clutch is. You could have a hairline crack in it, that could be leaking trans oil. Just a few thoughts..

Yeah thats what I thougt. That, or it leaked so much oil that the clutch splattered it about? I took of that shield and flexplate, looked at that galley plug, there isnt any oil in there, but theres some between the block and the shield. I suspect that is from the cam sensor though.

This is turning out to be a big headache... I do have another mt here, I think I will just swap over the retrofit and give that one a try. Chrysler parts dept doesnt open on Sundays.

Gonna give the spare tranny a whirl. Hope I dont have 2 bad ones.

almost certain its tranny, put in 2 brand new fresh quarts, drove for 30 ishmiles tops and .7 quarts are gone, odly enough its looks like .5 quarts came out when I seperated the tranny and engine.

ok, now im really stumped.

oil that came out ~ 4qts. This is not that bad since I have not let it sit for a while and then theres still th oil in the filter correct?
