OK folks, I am in a bit of a spot now. It seems my ABS equiped car is causing me problems again. I was planning on getting driveshaftshop.com axles, but the main problem with that is they CAN'T work the abs. ring won't fit ove rthe axle end, and the axle end can't be machined down to fit it. so I am trying to weigh my options. I remember some people mentioning that a few other places made high strength axles for out cars, and I was wondering if you can list them here with contact numbers. I don't want to get rid fo my abs....but I don't want to break down every weekend either. please somebody help me out.oh, btw, somebody with NOS knowledge please read the Nos board. I need help there also.

Alright.. here's what little i know. I did some research about our axles, and found that unless u'r running in the 10's with slicks there really isn't any reason to go "performance". My car is running somewhere around 350 ish hp, and i know some guys on the board here have more than me, with no problems. I replaced my axles at 85k miles when i did my engine rebuild as a precaution, they were only 80 bucks, worth savin the trani in my opinion. Remember we don't have Honda's, our axles are over twice as strong, so i'ld just go stock.

well, my car is putting down about 300 lb ft of torque to the wheels on the street, and I have broken 4 or 5 axles currently. It is really a necessity for me. I wouldn't say that if I haven't had to change an axle every other time I take my car out :(

Armond, a buddy of mine used to work for CNNP and swears by their axles. he is constantly breaking stocking axles in his Neon as well (actually, whenever his brother drives the car they break, hehe, his nickname is Axle b/c of it)he just couldnt afford CNNp axles cuz he gets stock axles dirt cheap. I know the tranny's are the same, not sure about the axles, but they may be able to help.. (954) 986-7966

You just told someone with 450hp off the bottle that it is not worth doing. ;-) I personally have already had to change my axles as well. Our stock axles are pretty weak when you start making power, but that is a case for all fwd cars that I know of.

So how much hp and or tq can our stock axles handle? Before they snap? This is assuming someone is running slicks.

There is more to it than just maximum power. Armond broke an axle on the stock motor that dynoed no more than 120fwhp. A lot of it is driveline shock as well. A big reason his avenger breaks axles is it is incredibly stiff. He has stiff motor mounts, fully polyurethane bushings, big 18" wheels with no rubber to absorb the shock, and the car is heavy. All that shock has to go somewhere and the axle is the next weakest point in his chain. Most people will probably rip a motor mount before they break an axle. I have for the most part put mine through a lot and have come out pretty decent on the axle front. I am using stock rubber bushings and only the suspension techniques front/rear inserts. the downside to this is of course a loss of traction. I honestly think his is a case of too much traction with a ton of power and weight extrapolated on top. The secret to saving drivelione parts is weight reduction. Look at how Extreme has been able to run low 9's with AWD. They ditched a ton of weight.

I have yet to break an axle or a motor mount, yippie! bout the only thing i have going for me, lol... nah, i dont drop it from a light or stuff like that a whole bunch cause I fear breakin' an axle... cause if i break one, then i am deffinately getting upgraded ones and i aint got no money rite now :-( laters, let us know what you find out about upgrades for abs.(how does abs work anyhow?, and would i still have abs even though i have upgraded brakes front and back?)

ABS works by pulsating the brakes when the wheels lock up with the brake applied. this keeps the car from sliding, and reduces brakign distance. upgrading yoru brakes usu doesn't affect this feature. the abs computer reads wheel spin or lock by a littel gear that is on the end of our axles thta goes into the hubs. there is a magnetic pickup in the hub that reads the rise and fall of the cogs, adn when it sees no change while the brake is applied before moving, it pulsates the system (feels like the brake pedal is going to break). the problem with the driveshaft shop axles is that their CV section of the axle is larger than the factory cv section, which helps in strength. it doesn't have a space for the abs gear 'though. without the abs gear, you will probably get an abs light, and your brakes won't pulsate anymore when you lock them up. for right now, I think I am just goign to hold on to my napa receipts nd see how many axles i can go through before I snap myself :(. I REALLY need my abs.

well, i'll have to look into that when i get my car running again but i have a feeling my abs has already been removed... there is no light in the abs hole in the dash gauges, and i have never felt a pulsating under lockup.... btw, how much are napa replacement axles? and i guess they have a lifetime warrenty? they havent went crazy since you've swapped so many broken ones?

brad, you probably dont' have abs if you didnt' have to go thoguth a bunch of hoops to get that fmic on. axles from napa are 100 bucks. no question asked lifetime warranty. Just a pain to remove every time I want to get on my car :(.
