94325, PS/Idler/AC belt keeps shredding, help?
Posted by Nine5eclipse03, Nov-06-05 09:30 AM
Every time i put on a new accessory belt, it stays on and runs fine for about 24 hours, then splits in half and falls off. Whats up with this? Is it the idler pulley?

I would check your crank pulley make sure its tightened all the way down.

As stated above you might not have the crankpully all the way on or you could have a problem with one of the pullies, check the surfaces to make sure there isnt a reason the belt is shredding. Inaddition to that, make sure you are not overtightening the belt. overtightening will cause the belt to jump off the idler pulley and get shredded. Make sure the bearing in the idler pulley is not bad.

I had the same problem. It was the crank pully, and the fact that the crank bolt threads were stripped not allowing the pully to be completely tightened down. I would recommend checking the bolt threads, then making sure that you heat the pully up before you install it. If heated up properly, and enough, the install should be smooth. make sure you tighten the pully down before it has a chance to cool too much, that way you get the best, most snug fit.

Alright, i got everything torn apart, and the crank pulley was loose enough, that i could turn it about 1.25 turns until it was tight, and then added ANOTHER belt. WOuld that small amount of slack be enough to break the belts? Or is it probably something else? The pulley seems to be good, not loose or anything, and ive never tightened the belt too much. it seems pretty good.

There was a post a while ago (you'll have to search for it) about the tensioner bearing going bad, but you could get another one at McMaster-carr for a couple bucks. I remember posting about it a least 6 months ago.

If your pulley isn't the issue, your next step might be to check that. In addition, when you have the belt off, make sure all the pullies that it turns can turn freely. Something sticking or not rotating right could wreak havoc on a rubber belt.

Just a thought....
