94308, Turbo options for 2.0L RS Posted by wildside50, Nov-05-05 07:55 AM
I'll wager I'm gunna get a lot of "search" responses, but --
I used to have a 3rd gen Eclipse, but the car just wasn't mod friendly, so I traded in for a pair of SRT-4's. But my friend drives a GS 2nd gen. I love his car (who cares if I can beat him in a straight line, its a drivers race on the autocross course) but I know he wants more power. I was just curious what are some reputable / good turbo kits available for the RS/GS, and what kinda boost levels are safe to run on that engine? Thanks for any responses.

Do a search on Hahn Racecraft or Star. As for "safe" boost levels, people here have had success with 7-8 psi and lower, but its all in the tuning. Granted, this is on a stock motor. Throw some forged internals in there and the options are endless. I think you should hit up the search button...

Okay, then my followup questions is -- how is a car with 7-8 psi can outperform a stock GS-T, don't they run 12-14? I mean, I know there's more to it than a PSI number, but thats a pretty big gap...

Compression ratio,weight.....search...

Compression ratio(especially if you have forged internals and have chosen the lower,8.8:1 compression ratio) and weight are about the same in both cars. One reason it may perform better is because the 420a is a more "modern" engine and our cylinder head flows exceptionally well. An eclipse, with a turbo kit running 7-8 psi, could outperform a gst. It could also fail miserably. (Think driver skill)

SEARCH!
And if anything, I believe this topic belongs in the Turbo/Nitrous Tech section.
Hahn or Star, what everyone says. Or if your cheap like me, piece one together yourself like I plan on doing lol.

2Gb turbo DSMs come with a T25 turbo. Affectionately known as a "tee too small."
HRC kits come with a Super 16G-10cm (which is why it is called "super"). Consider this image from RRE which compares the 16G-7cm (which is smaller than the S16G) to a T25.

Bigger turbos move more air at lower boost levels.
And SEARCH, dammit.

Sell it and buy a 2G GSX with low mileage. They are wicked cheap these days.
Or
1. Make sure you have another car to get yourself to school/work/etc... 2. Get a 16G/FMIC/Portfuler kit from HRC. It's not a perfect kit, but HRC has been in buisness for a long time and they are generally very good about helping their customers out.

Why need a car to go to work and back? not reliable or just to much on gas? I plan on getting forged pistons and going turbo so I am interested.

Because it will break. No matter how well done it is, it will still break. They all do. And the more power you make, the harder you tune it, the worse it will be when it finally does go. You want something else so you don't have to rush to put it back together. No job = no money = no car getting fixed = no getting to work = No job.

You guys are so cynical. (Yes, i really did just say that - me - DarkOne. WTF?)
Don't listen to these guys. I daily drove my turbo 2GNT for a long, long time and aside from the occasional issue that caused me to need to bum a ride for a day or two, it was nothing any other car at this age won't do to you.
You'll be fine. These guys seem to forget the multitudes of people that made a stock motor last for many years just because they couldn't/didn't do it.

O I C. Well then maybe a turbo isn't my best option. What other things can I do to my car to make it faster but still reliable?

Did you just miss what Dark0ne said? If you put a turbo kit on it, perform general preventative maintenance, and remain conservative, you'll be fine. Any car can break at any time. Granted, there are a few things that lessen the time, but for the most part, you'll end up the same.
You take care of your car, it'll take care of you.

alright. Sounds good! I guess I will keep my original plan and get my forged pistons first and good head gasket and stuff. And go with a medium sized turbo for longer life. I don't want a huge turbo because then it will most likely break the way I drive :). Thanks for the good info....

oh trust me, if you go all out with the money and rebuld your whole motor, you WILL want to get the biggest best turbo for it after that point. Mine as well if you've spent the time and money to do it. Dont listen to DR166 or whatever, hes a downer, your car will be fine for daily driving under boost, and the only way you WILL break your internals IF its done right is by overboosting on a daily basis..

What he meant was that any car will break down, it's not 'if it will break down', it's 'when it will break down'. He knows from experience.
